All I do is click on the shortcut icon to start up Excel 2000 and it
crashes.
It worked fine about 2 months ago.
From the Reinstall or Repair Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Small Business
splash screen I tried first repairing (no luck) then reinstalling (no
luck) from the program on the Office 2000 CD. Message said re-install
went fine but Excel 2000 still won't start up. All other Office
programs work fine.
Also after reinstalling the programs I ran Microsoft Product Updates
and it said that Office 2000 Service Release 1a (SR-1a) and Office
2000 Service Pack 2 (SP-2) along with a bunch of other files are still
installed. When I run Word I see (9.0.4402 SR-1) so I don't know if
the Microsoft Product Updates is right or wrong.

FIX!!!! Below
Finally after days of trying suggestions of every kind some which
helped a lot here is the fix which worked for me. Also I will list
some other super helpful hints that helped me along the way after the
fix.
I used a file downloaded at:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/2000/download/orktools.exe
called Orktools.exe which loads a program called Microsoft Office 2000
Resource Kit Tools and then used the program Profile WIzard within the
Resource Kit to reset the Office 2000 registry settings to their
Default values.
Here is how to do it.
Using your Web browser, go to the following address:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/2000/download/orktools.exe
Save the Orktools.exe program to your Desktop.
2.Install Orktools.exe by double-clicking it and following the
on-screen instructions.
To restore your Microsoft Office 2000 registry settings to their
default values:
1.Quit any Microsoft Office programs that are running.
2.On the Start menu, point to Programs , point to Microsoft Office
Tools , point to Microsoft Office 2000 Resource Kit Tools , and click
Profile Wizard .
3.Click Next.
4.Click the Restore previously saved settings option button. Select
the Reset to defaults before restoring settings check box. Make sure
that there is
no file name shown in the Edit box. Then click Finish .
5.When you receive the message
You have not specified a settings file to be restored, but you have
selected "Reset to defaults before restoring settings." This will
restore the Office default settings on this computer. Are you
sure you want to continue?
click Yes .
6.When you receive the message You have completed the Profile Wizard.
The default Office Settings were restored. Then click Exit.
Other helpful info
1. To run Excel 2000 in Safe Mode (At least this way you can get to
your files)
Try running Excel in "safe mode." You do this by using the following
command (including the quotes) from Windows' Start/Run:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Excel.exe" /s
2.Try starting Excel while holding the shift key.
If that works, an add-in is troubling you. Try unchecking
them in (Excel's menu) Tools, Add-ins. Recheck one by one
to find the culprit. Restart XL each time you added one
addin.
3. "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Excel.exe" /automation
(prevents any add-in or file from xlstart from loading)
4. The best article that Microsoft has to find out about
troubleshooting Excel 2000. XL: How to Troubleshoot Startup Problems
in Microsoft Excel (Q280504) with tons of links to specific problems.
I hope this helps somebody out someday.
