Excel 2007 worksheet switching issue using Windows 7

Has anyone experienced an issue with the ability to fluently switch between
worsheets in an Excel 2007 Workbook? I noticed that it would often take
several mouse clicks on a Tab before the worksheet finally switched. Once it
does, it is fluent for a short time and then hangs up again. The cycle
repeats.

Any suggestions that will help this, shy of a patch or waiting for MSO 2010?

I have the same issue. It brings up the master explorer program menu
(Restore, Move, Size, Minimize, Maximize, Close). Bugs me a lot.

Do you have any add-ins loaded that are using the sheet
activate/deactivate event to do a bunch of work?

Does it only happen in Win 7?

Cheers

Just upgraded to Win 7 and quickly discovered this "feature." Same as the
others: hard to switch worksheets; often the master explorer menu pops up. I
better not have to upgrade just to get rid of this error...

Workaround for now: CTRL + PG DOWN (or PG UP) will move to worksheet to left
or right... You have to have a cell in the worksheet selected.

For the record, I have Win 7 64 bit.

Hi Stefan,

Check your add/remove programs and ensure "Updates" is checked. Uninstall Excel
update KB973593 (updated in november 2009 if I recall correctly) if it is
there.

Does that fix the problem?

If so, please call 1-866-pcSafety for free, to report issues with this security
update.

We've exactly the same problem on PCs with Windows Vista and W7 both x64. We
don’t use any macros, any add-ins in Excel 2007. I checked Updates and
KB973593 is not installed.
How shall we fix the issue?
Thanks a lot.
Koudy.

And you have all other updates applied?

Hi Jiri,

Odd, the KB you mentioned is the only one I know causing the problem described
here.
Is this on any workbook or just one?

The issue is indicated on various excel’s workbooks on two independent PC’s
(one is newly installed 3 weeks ago).

Odd indeed. I'm afraid I have no solution at hand right now.

Did this start happening at a certain date?

Have a look at your list of updates (control panel, add/remove programs). What
happens if you remove the last one(s)? (they will be offered by Windows update
again automatically after that)

Hallo Jan,
the problem started on my PC about 3 months ago but I don’t know the date
exactly. I’ll try to remove some last updates (MSO and/or Windows???). But I
don’t like solutions like that. My PC is fine tuned in the other fields and I
don’t want to do any harm. Maybe I’ll wait for new proper update.
For now I thank you very much for your advice.

Have you tried the hotfix:

Hi Jan,
I tried hotfix kb978522 and kb978399 and nothing is solved. No hotfix you
wrote about earlier is installed on my PC.
Maybe a resolution of the graphics is the reason. It is 1920 x 1200 on both
PCs (HP EliteBook 8730w) and problem is presented only if Excel is maximized
on primary monitor.

Have you tried things like different screen driver settings, changing printer
driver?

Bad switching between tabs occurs only if display Y resolution is 1200.
Otherwise it works OK.

Hi Jiri,

Which makes it likely that this is a problem caused by the display driver
rather than by Excel.

I'm sorry I can't do more to help you!

I too am having this problem and have found that changing the resolution is a
temporary fix. Details of my system are:

HP Pavilion dv7 Notebook
Windows 7 Home 64-bit
8 gb ddr3 ram
MS Office 2007
NVIDIA GeForce GT320M

One other thing that I noticed that makes me think that it make not be a
display driver is that when you "undock" the excel workbook from the excel
application so that it is in "window mode," switching between worksheets
works without a hitch, regardless of the resolution of my screen. Any
further insight or ideas into what is causing this problem would be greatly
appreciated.

Thank you for everyone's support as this is the only place where I have seen
a discussion on the tpoic. Any further help will be greatly appreciated.

Best,
Chad

Unfortunately, I haven't found any indication of a solution so far.

Does it help to change the hardware acceleration settings of your display
driver?

Jan,

Thank you again for your work on this subject. I have adjusted the hardware
acceleratin settings but to no avail. Unfortunately, the issue is still
prevalent. I have also gone throught he process of uninstalling all MS
Office updates (excluding SP2) to see if I could narrow down if it was an
update that is causing the problem, and unfortunately, I was not able to
reach a conclusion that way either.

Please update us if you find anything out.

Thanks again,
Chad

Maybe here is the solution:
A few days ago a hot fix for application “HP Wireless Assistant - 3.50.11.2
(15 IV 2010) - sp48392.exe (3.8 MB)” was released. And the comment is:

“Fixes an issue, which occurs when using Microsoft Excel on a notebook that
is running a 32-bit version of the Microsoft Windows 7 Professional Operating
System, where a pop-up menu is displayed when the Sheet1 tab at the bottom of
the screen is clicked (instead of the tab contents being displayed). The
displayed pop-up menu is the same as the menu you would see if you
right-clicked the window's title bar.”

Exactly what we need!!! I installed it at once and the issue seems to be
solved. No menu appears, but sometimes I cannot switch by one click, I have
to click several times. But it is certainly improvement.
And good thing is that we know, what the reason is. I will go after new
versions of this driver/application.

For my HP notebook:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=cs&cc=cz&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=3784202&swItem=ob-82378-1&prodNameId=3784204&swEnvOID=2103&swLang=5&taskId=135&mode=4&idx=3

good luck!
