If I set a chart's axis labels to a range cells that have formatted
superscripts, the superscript formatting is ignored on the chart. I suppose
I could work around this with text boxes for the (footnote) superscripts. I
think I must be missing something, though, because we could do this in Excel
5. Is there a solution? Does anyone know if this functionality was removed
in Excel 97? Thanks in advance.

I think you are mistaken about doing it in Excel 5. The axis labels are
plain-text only, not the rich-text-format which would be required for
super/subscripting.

It ignores the formatting in your source cell, but you can insert
superscripts/subscripts after you have built the chart.
Select the chart, select the axis label, select the letter(s) of concern, then
choose Format-->Selected Axis Title (or Ctrl + 1). You get a subset of the
normal Font formatting options. Two of the checkmarks are SUBSCRIPT and
SUPERSCRIPT.
Hope this helps,

Thanks for your reply. I was mistaken about Excel 5. But the issue of
superscripts in individual elements of a Category Axis remains. I still
don't see how it can be done. As far as I know, you cannot select
individual labels, so there would be no way to superscript some of the
characters (we need to add footnote reference numbers to a few of the
labels). To make matters worse, I have an Excel 97 spreadsheet that has the
desired superscripts in the labels! I don't know how this was
accomplished -- it may have originated in Lotus 1-2-3 or perhaps there is
some macro sorcery? I do know that any attempt to edit the superscript
portion in the source cell removes the superscript format in the graph
label, leaving me right back where I started.
I'm continuing to look into the problem. If anyone has suggestions, this
tired old man would be forever in your debt.

This is correct, and if you make some characters in the source cells
superscripted, the chart ignores them.
The only solution I can think of is to use a font for the axis labels
which includes superscripted characters in the normal character set.
For example, most Windows fonts includes the characters ą˛ł as standard.
If you want more than this, you may need to create your own font for it
