I won't (can't) argue that QP11 isn't a dog, but have you tried asking
questions in Corel's newsgroups? You'll need to connect to Corel's news
server, cnews.corel.com. While there's nowhere near the traffic as in
Microsoft's Excel newsgroups, there are some pretty knowledgeable people who
respond there. They may know what you'd need to do to get the service packs
installed. Worth a try.
That said, if QP5 still works (aside from the short filename restriction),
why move to a later version?
I got the Corel Word Perfect Office X3 explicitly for Quattro Pro. as
the DOS version was superior to almost everything on the market then,
and is (in some ways) still superior to "Excel" which does not (excel).
That being said, i totally agree with Harlan in that it is a piece of
sh*t.
In Excel, one can make umpteen copies of a chart and *all* of them
look and act identically.
In QP, the main title format gets diddled and one has to lie as to
font size to get a look *similar* to the original; it is impossible to
get it to look the same without using a fractional size (eg: 10.4) to
have something look like 12.
And some copies are OK that way, but others are goofed; not
consistent in any manner.
Macros? I would dearly like to have a set where i can create each
chart, set the main title *WITH* specified fontsize, set the data range,
and *PLACE* that chart at a particular row and column (in a given sheet).
I do not think there is *any* spreadsheet program that can do that.
My *only* reason and excuse for using QP is the fact that it is the
only spreadsheet that can show two different independent variables,
using related but different colors on one chart.
***
There is absolutely *NO* support for (at least this version of) QP;
on does not get needed answers even in the Corel NGs.
**
Any potential alternatives?
No support in the Corel newsgroups? That is news to me.
The corel newsgroups are on the cnews.corel.com server.
You can also get some of the same help at wpuniverse.com in the Other
Office Programs forum.
I haven't concentrated on Charts in my qp macro book with examples.
Maybe that could be a new chapter. See my web site for the qp macro
chapters that I have completed to date.

You might check into some programs like R to do your Charts. QP, L123
and Excel can be used to store your data. One can then use R to make
the Charts from exported data. Not sure if R can make the Charts as you
like though. I have used R to make Charts with more features than any
spreadsheet program.
With all that being said, if qp Charts work with a bit a tweaking then
go for it. I would not be surprised though if Charts are used then
corruption may occur. My advice is to make backups prior to attempting
new Charts.
Will look into that.
Is QP11 newer that the WP Office X3 version (or anything else newer)?
Backups every time one generates a new chart is not exectly conducive
to productivity or sanity when faced with 40+ charts that look the same
but have different data and title.
Why are there two names for a chart (chartNN and ?inserted?NN)? And
the enforcement of using one name for some things and the other for
other things?
And there is that "window" that one supposedly sees icons of all of
the charts..what good is it, especially when charts do not show there
and one can "rename" them as one sees fit (names that will be ignored
elsewhere)?
I have a whole raft of issues with QP X3 and there are so many and so
severe that it is almost useless.
Could not get help from Corel (the program was not fit for the use
advertised).
*DID* not get any help from the so-called users groups; the best i
got were one or two comments that the problems did/do not exist ...
really useful (NOT).
So, back to the question: is there a newer (and hopefully more
useable) version?
What is a WPD?
"R" is 29Megs; absolutely impossible to download via dial-up: (1)
would take a goodly part of a day ASS-u-ME-ing that there were no burps,
line faults, etc and (2) the assumption of no problems becomes false as
size gets above 5-8 meg region.
Is there a way of buying a CD (windows, might as well as ask for
manual and any addons)?
R is sort of like SAS or S-Plus if you know what they are. It has a
steep learning curve. If you care to learn though, it has many advanced
features. While SAS programming code is more Basic-like, R is more
C-Like.
As for downloading large programs, I used to start the download at night
and it would be ready by morning when I used dial-up. Some programs
like GetRight can let you resume a download if it fails. For the really
big downloads, I got it put on a cd by a relative with high speed
connection. Your local library might have a better connection. If you
join an R forum, you might be able to find someone to mail you a cdrom
with R on it.
After you install R, I think the manual should be available. The online
help for R is good once you understand how to use it. Many of the
add-ons and Libraries for R can be found at the site that I referenced.
R has a means to download some add-on libraries from within R.
If I get time in the next few weeks or months, I might make a
PerfectScript or VB.NET macro to marry QP and R to make Charts. R code
is like programming macros. It can execute other programs as well. I
usually just execute R programs that may execute other macros or
programs to perform various tasks. As in all things, take one step at a
time when you start learning it but understand the full scope of the work.
If you do get into trying R, TINN-R is a good program to help you create
and organize, execute and debug your R code programs. Is an Editor
sort of like Visual Basic's Editor with Intelli-Sense.
In R, I created a program to analyze data from a database, create graphs
and create WordPerfect merges to create parts of a report. The
PerfectScript macro that R executed performed the merges and made PDF
files from the WPD files. The R graphs were saved as PDF files. To
assemble the report, I appended all the PDF files in Adobe Acrobat but
other programs can do that too.
Some R libraries were written to enable more interaction between Excel
and R. This makes it a bit easier to marry those two applications.
WPD means WordPerfect Document.
Regarding the issue of others saying that a problem is not a problem, if
a problem can not be duplicated, then you can get no help. Sometimes,
problems are specific to a user's setup that others may not have.
Your other comments covered some broad topics that are hard to address.
It is best to state one question per thread. I explained the Object
sheet in my QP macro book. As for the issue of saving often being a
pain, tedious tasks are what macros Excel at.
What is the best version of QP? I think most found QP8 the best. After
that, they changed some things to address some other issues which caused
some stability problems. I haven't found much difference between QP11
and QPX3.
The cnews.corel.com news server is the best place to find QP experts.
Those newsgroups are not on this news server that you are using now to
read this post.
WPUniverse.com has the advantage that you can attach small sample
Notebooks to get specific help in their "Other WordPerfect Office
Programs" forum. I visit there often.
I would try either one or both, but at that size, it is totally
impossible to get via POTS.
> I would try either one or both, but at that size, it is totally

You lost me. What is POTS? What size do you mean?
Plain Old Telephone System; 48Kbaud.
It was just a few months back that I downloaded 20-30 gb files overnight
using dial-up. Getting the Windows updates by dial-up took a long time.
It is to laughing ... you fellow Amerikanskis are such backwardnesses
Here in Japan, the standard ADSL contract is 24 or 48Mbps and fiber
starts at 100Mbps. You can get an 8Mbps account for your kid's PC for
an extra fifty cents a month. Dowloading the entire contents of a DVD
takes about four minutes and there is enough bandwidth to run my
company's 20-phone PBX system on the same line without interrupting
anything. My business is entirely services for foreign clients and
between in-house VoIP and Skype, our overseas phone charges are less
than US$100 / month. We haven't had dialup since 1992 and haven't had
an international phone carrier since 2002.
Then again, none of my neighbors kids can hit a raghead a 3000 meters
with a standard .223 round (like we could when we were young) and none
of them have flown home in a box lately ... and we have trains that run
on time and don't catch fire. My kids are growing up speaking three
languages, all of which are on the school curriculum and none of which
are Spanish. And some people wonder why I'm not in a hurry to pack up
and move back to the 'States ...
Yes!!!
Japanese trains have been world reknown for timeliness for at least
40 years, as well known for the Bullet train that is verrrrrrrrrrrry
smooth and goes rather fast.
What has not been known, is that particulat public transportation
system has been running at a *profit* which puts all US public transport
to great shame.
Oh, yes: languages? US kids "R" lucky to be able to *read* by fifth
grade..would that be called 0.5 languages?
Maybe less.. "..he goes.." etc in the modern lingo.
