Hello,
Can anyone tell me if there is a web page or help file which explains the
entries in Detlog.txt and Bootlog.txt and how these entries are of use for
optimization and trouble-shooting?

I don't know for the detlog.txt but for the bootlog.txt see below.
for win95x you can get a free startup manager(Startup Cop)from here,
ftp://ftp.tpsa.pl/pub/ZDnet/fr/public/startcop.zip

CAUTION: you should backup any system critical files before making any
changes.Free WRP program on my page@
http://www.d-sheppard.karoo.net//help.htm help pages
for this which is only
for single user profiles.
Win98 has it's own backup systems, but I still prefer an
easy to get to fixed known good backup of the registry.

Win 98 has the msconfig which you can type at the start/Run box which can
be used to organize what is loaded at boot up.
Having a Network card installed can slow up boot time.

There is an excellent freeware program called"BLA"
(Boot Log Analyser) which you can get from,
http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Troy/6883/DownLoad/Bla.zip
Empty your bootlog.txt on your Root drive and then
re-boot and either press the F2 key as it boots or
the F8 key and choose logged bootup to make a new
fresh one and the run BLA.This will show delays and
you can go from there.
This shows where some programs load from on bootup
that may not show in the Ctrl Alt Delete and may be
running in the background and not show in the systray.

Programs start from:
1-Items in the startup folder(delete/move the shortcut)
2-from within the program itself/settings/preferences
(change to no load at bootup)
3-items in config.sys and autoexec.bat(rem out or delete)
All things below this line are dangerous without experience
WARNING:If you have a pre-win95b version of windows then download the
updated
version of Regedit(around 103/104k)as the old one was useless and dangerous.

4-Load= and Run= lines in system.ini and win.ini files
(delete or place a comma before or after the equals sign
5-Seven keys in the registry:(try not to use this option
unless you are confident with the registry and make a backup of the registry
Free backup program at my site below for this).

Bootlog.txt - Windows9x startup log file

This file records the progress of the Windows 9x
startup (boot) process, and is stored in the root directory.
It is created if you request a "logged boot" from the
F8 Startup Menu, and is also created automatically by
Windows 9x if Windows 9x detected that the previous boot
was unsuccessful.

This file is not necessary for the proper operation
of Windows 9x and can be deleted.

Detlog.txt - Windows9x detection log file

This file records the progress of the Windows 9x
hardware detection, and is stored in the root directory.
It is created during hardware detection and is consulted
by the hardware detection recovery process if the
previous attempt todetect hardware caused problems.

This file is not necessary for the proper operation
of Windows 9x and can be deleted.
