Everything works correctly, all the audio and multimedia
function, the text-to-speech engine, etc., EXCEPT the
pronunciations in the Dictionary Tools. When I click on
the speaker icon next to the word, nothing happens. No
audio, no errors, nothing.
thanks for any feedback
If you go to your Control Panel, and open up "Sounds and Audio Devices",
click on Advanced in the Device volume section, you should be able to see if
anything (like Wave volume) is muted. If not, in that same volume control
window click on Options>Properties, then select your sound device and click
on playback, and check all the boxes and click ok. After that the Volume
Control Window will be much longer, make sure nothing except for maybe
Microphone and Line In are muted.
If that doesn't work, would you mind telling me how you istalled Encarta?
If you installed it by not copying the files to your hard drive, there is a
chance that you might need the DVD in your DVD drive for the sounds to play.
I hope this helps you.

the hard drive".

Stephen all other sounds work fine anthems, audio clips, sound effects,
whatever it is
only the pronunciation that doesn't work.
This option is very important for me because english is my second language
Have you tried reinstalling/repairing the Encarta install? Go to the
control panel>Add/Remove Programs.
Then, find Microsoft Encarta and click Change. Then, Next, and then Repair.
Try it again after the Repair and let me know what happens.
Also, what kind of audio device are you using?

Have you tried updating your sound drivers. You may want to check your PC's
manufacurer's website for those.
I hope you won't have to reformat.
If the drivers do not work, you can also try repairing Windows. I will give
you intructions if updating the drivers does not work.

Please give me instruction for updating
regards Michael
In Internet Explorer, Click "Tools" : "Internet Options" : "Advanced".
Make sure "Play sounds in web pages" is checked, and re-launch Edict (you
may need to reboot) and see if that helps.

Sorry for the delay in my response; I thoght Greg's solution would have done
it for sure. Anyway, rather than give you a lenghty guide to repairing
Windows XP in this post, I am giving you a link to another MVP's website.
