moving files and pictures

Hi, I have recently purchased a windows 7 laptop after years of using xp.
However one thing is baffling me, with xp if you wish to move a file or a
picture if you click on the file in question you can pick a task from the
left hand pane ie; move or copy, then a "copy items" box opens up and you
pick the folder where you want to copy it to. This doesn't seem to happen in
windows 7 however hard I try! I can move them by dragging and dropping but I
find this method a bit of a pain and very time consuming. There must be a
better way, could someone help me figure it out or at least enlighten me!
