Personal image on foldes

Hello,

I'm still using Windows XP Pro on one of my computers, where i store (to
much) images from over the world.

All images are (of course) selected and placed in a appropriated folder.

I remember i was able to "identify" each folder with a specific image.

All images are vanished, and i'm unable to restore them.

Is it because of the format (png) and should it "gif" instead ?

When i open one of the folders using "properties" > "personalyze" > choise
an image" > "picking up an image" "apply" .
It's not show onto the folder !

Can anyone help me please to restore the images on the folders ?
