I'm trying to install Visual Basic .net Standard on a W2K
Pro, but runs into serious problems.

During MS Windows Component Update, I get a message, that
Microsoft .NET Framework is required for Visual Basic .NET.
However the installation fails, and I get no explanation.

Checking in the installation log, I find the following
section:
[02/18/03,14:38:21] Microsoft .NET Framework:
CreateProcess launched with cmd line
d:\dotnetframework\dotnetfx.exe "d:\dotnetframework\dotnetf
x.exe" /q:a /c:"install /q /l"
[02/18/03,14:39:03] Setup.exe: IsRunningUnattended
[02/18/03,14:39:04] Microsoft .NET Framework:
d:\dotnetframework\dotnetfx.exe exited with return value
4099
[02/18/03,14:39:04] Microsoft .NET Framework: ***ERRORLOG
EVENT*** : Error code 4099 for this component
means "Baseline failed. Please check dotnetfx.log in the
temp directory for details."
[02/18/03,14:39:04] Microsoft .NET Framework: ***ERRORLOG
EVENT*** : Setup Failed on component Microsoft .NET
Framework

The dotNetFx.log file tells this:
[02/18/03,14:39:03] Message: Setup cannot access Windows
Installer components. Setup cannot continue.

I have then tried to do the installation manually
executing the dotnetfx.exe file from the \dotNetFramework
directory on the installation CD.

Doing this produces the following error:
"Microsoft .NET Framework Setup needs to update the
Microsoft Windows Installer components before Setup can
continue. Proceed with installation?"
Clicking the 'No' button here terminates the installation,
while clicking the 'Yes' button produces another error:
"Setup cannot access Windows Installer components. Setup
cannot continue."
To this I can only click an 'OK' button, and the
installation terminates.

If I then try to execute the instmsiW.exe file in the
\WindowsInstaller\2.0 directory on the CD, I'm told:
"Den angivne tjeneste findes allerede", which is danish
for "The specified Service is already present".

And I can't get further.

Have anybody had similar problems? And does anybody know
of a solution to this?

Any help will be very much appreciated.

Greetings
