Pradyot,

No date has been announced, but I expect the compact framework and the version
of Visual Studio that supports it to be released about the same time as .Net
server - maybe early next year if all goes well.

Thanks for your quick reply Ginny. The group of
words "maybe early next year if all goes well" are quite
unreliable for my company's business decision makers.

Do you or any body else know which contact address in
microsoft can answer this somewhat reliably?

I'm sorry I don't have the contact information for you. I suspect, however, that
nobody at Microsoft is committing to a firm release date yet. I understand your
company's decision makers' need for a firm answer as I am in a similar
situation. Our decision was to continue using eVC++ for projects that must be
released soon while using the compact framework for development for projects
that can be released at some more indefinite point in the future.

According to [1], .the Everett release of VS .NET (including .NET CF) will
be RTM the end of this year with wide availability in Q1.

"Maybe early next year" is going to be the best that anyone can get. There
has been no official release announcement, and until there is one, it's all
speculation and guessing. The official announcement is likely to come at
some major event, but which one is also unknown.

Pradyot, you're not the first person to demand a definite answer about the
release date of a Microsoft product. I can assure you that there is
absolutely nobody at Microsoft who will give you a firm date. If you are an
extremely large account with an Enterprise Agreement, you may be able to get
your account manager to give you Microsoft's current internal release date
projection, but it is very much subject to change (and you will be required
to sign an NDA which specifically acknowledges this fact). Even if you get
the date and it doesn't change, you won't necessarily be able to obtain the
software on the RTM date. It may be weeks before it becomes available to
anybody outside Microsoft.

Microsoft has stated that the CF will release as part of the next release of
VS .NET, code-named Everett, which will release "about the same time" as the
release of Windows .NET Server 2003. Microsoft has stated that Windows .NET
Server 2003 will RTM on or before December 31, 2002 so that it will be
available in early 2003. Presumably (and this is just my presumption),
Everett will be tested with the RTM version of Windows .NET Server 2003, so
mid-January would be the very earliest that Everett could RTM. And again, it
could be weeks after that before you can actually get it, so now we're
talking about February.

Microsoft has also stated that there will be a "launch" of Windows .NET
Server 2003 during the first quarter of 2003. It makes the most sense to
launch Everett at the same time, if at all possible, so this might mean that
Everett will be available by the end of March or within the first two weeks
of April at the very latest. Or it might not.

Even though I don't have any inside info on CF, I'm pretty sure this the
most you're going to get from anybody anywhere. If it makes your company's
business decision makers feel any better, you can tell them that I once
shook Steve Ballmer's hand ;)

I'm still sulking over the fact that beta2 is closed...harumph....I'm still
with beta1 while you lot are working with the (more) bug-fixed version...

If you want to feel somewhat better about it, you could always install the
Tech Preview and use it for a while, then reinstall Beta1. :)

I thought that all registered Beta1 users were getting into the Beta2
program - if not don't sulk too much. I've not seen a whole heck of a lot
that makes a difference. It's got a few bugs worked out and has added a
couple things, but all in all it isn't much different than Beta1. Not even
the Beta2 people have the DataGrid.

I didn't get a chance to look at Beta 2 either. Does it have TreeView
support?

Yes - all registered beta 1 users were automatically enrolled in beta 2.
However, beta 1 was available through MSDN but beta 2 is not.
I personally think it was a poor decision by Microsoft to NOT provide an
upgrade path to paying MSDN subscribers who are actively using beta 1.

I got an email that I was enrolled, then went to beta place and nominated
myself (somewhat redundant). I have not received any response in almost 2
weeks. Am I supposed to get another email telling me where to download it,
or will it just eventually show up in my list of betas when I log onto beta
place?

Thanks,

James

If you had previously been able to access beta 1 through betaplace, you
should receive Everett by mail. Otherwise, you're pretty much out of luck.
I don't like how MS did this, but that's how it is.

I see. I took the MSDN route. Big mistake I guess. Oh well, the pocket pc
will have to take the back burner then.

Thanks for the info.
