How to force DirectX full screen window to close?

Some DirectX full screen games I play sometimes lock up for various reasons.
Sometimes when this happens I can't alt-tab away from the DirectX screen to
close it. That is, a different program comes to the front, but all I can
see is the DirectX screen (such as alt tabbing into irc I can find out that
it's active but I can't see it).

I've tried Alt-F4 with no reponse. Perhaps there is a message box for the
program waiting for input, I don't know. But when this happens the only way
I can close the directX screen is to reboot my computer, which I don't want
to do.
Anyone have a solution? Any magic key combination that will allow me to get
out of the DX full screen?
