Use Windows Start -> Run (or Win+R)

Type "dxdiag" in the box that comes up.

Check the Display tab so see if there are any errors.

Also, check Windows Update for any optional hardware updates for your
graphics driver.

I have this same problem and cannot find a solution. I have a compatible
computer, direct x 9.0c and it still comes up with alert. Anyone find a
solution to this???? My son wants to try the trial before we buy. I have seen
many posts on this subject but no answers.

Basically it means that the graphics hardware of your PC is not
compatible/adequate. This is a common problem with computers that come
with low-end integrated graphics such as the Intel 915/945. Modern games
expect a certain level of graphics processing power.

Depending on your PC you may be able to add a dedicated graphics card, of
course this comes with a monetary price tag. If it is a laptop then
upgrades usually aren't possible.

Ok, thank you! That is very helpful. It is not a laptop so maybe I can work
on this...

How do I find out what graphics card I have? All I see listed on the dxdiag
is DirectX 9.0c -is that it? Dont know how to find it otherwise.

After running dxdiag click on the Display 1 tab, it will list the name,
manufacturer, chip type and total memory for your graphics card. There is
also a couple of test buttons there, however they do not test the new
features that games use such as hardware shaders.

If your computer is a Dell, HP or Gateway then it should have a graphics
expansion slot. New computers should have a PCI-E slot, older computers
may have an AGP slot. If you supply the PC model number I can try to look
this up for you.

This would imply that the copy that you downloaded is corrupt. Try to
download it again, possibly use a download manager to ensure completion as
it is large.

I'm getting the exact same message when I try to run Spore under Windows 7,
but there's nothing wrong with my graphics card -- Spore ran on this same
computer under Vista two days ago. Like the others here, I've already
reinstalled Direct-x 9. What do I try now?

Run dxdiag at the command prompt to ensure that Direct 9 is installed
successfully. Ensure you have at least 128MB available under the Display of
the dxdiag window. If all are in place, update your display adapter by going
to Control Panel then clicking on device manager. Expand the Display
adapter, right click on the sub adapter and click update driver software and
follow the prompt to search online for updates. If either doesn't work, you
might need to reinstall the display adapter driver using the original CD
that came with the computer.
If you still experience difficulty, invite someone you can trust using
remote
assistance to troubleshoot the issue

Ok, sounds like games ARE the problem, so far.
I'm experiencing a little different problem. I recently noticed my display
acting different after hooking up a new wireless mouse, (microsoft
intellimouse explorer 2.0). I already had the latest Intellimouse software
installed for my previous mouse. When I checked dxdiag, all the tests ran
properly, yet it said direct draw and direct 3D are "Not Available". I have
never seen this before, even though my graphics card is an older ATI Radeon
7000 series AGP unit with ATI's last updated driver package for this card
which is ver. 6.11. After running a direct x re-install the problem seemed
to be worse, which is when scrolling a page it re-draws the page repeatedly
as you scroll down and is REALLY annoying! Yes, I have smooth scrolling
activated and have re-checked all the mouse settings.
Maybe I should just re-install EVERYTHING...... thanks again M-soft
