Virtually every forum from each computer brand ansd system builder and each
company involved, you see people clamoring for a solution:
"Display Driver nvlddmkm stopped responding, has successfully recovered"
The dreaded error, that makes all the promises of high end computing and
supposed "better performance" a lie.
Even reasonable requests for more information from Nividia results in even
very politwe posts being deleted
All these threads below are people asking for help and complaining and
trying every possible thing to eliminate the errors from computer systems,
containing all the best and most expensive components.
With the exception of one vague statement from Nvidia, nothing is be heard.
No fix. No solution. No info.
Its a form of robbery
This list of threads below is just the tip of the iceberg.

Gaming is dead on this high end computer.
de-install fixes
re-install video drivers
etc etc....
ATI is getting this Atikmdag has stopped responding and has successfully
recovered and yes nothing from Microsoft on how to fix it... Since it's both
cards --- It has to be a Vista problem...
I'm getting more and more pissed by the day...
I bought a brand new Toshiba X205-SLI1--->supposed to be a top of the line
gaming laptop with 2 GeForce 8600 GT video cards i did not expect to have any
complications gaming. However trying to play WoW on this machine is like
returning to 1990s video games, its annoying. For $2000 i should have a
complete system capaple of running the most high end games out there but no i
got punked by Vista.
If you are reading this and work for Microoft then pay attention. It is
clear that your customers are crying out for help. This seems like the
problem that every manufacturer is "avoiding" "turning the other cheek"
"placing on the back burner". I can only hope that Mac will release a
commercial using this issue as an advertising pitch then Microsoft might
listen when they consider the potential lose of consumers. This problem
neeeds to be addressed now!
The hot fix for this kb936710 is garbage, didn't do anything. Why hasnt
this been fixed yet? I have read that people have been having this issue
since Vista came out. Plenty of time for the thinkbots at Microsoft to
release a real patch to fix it.
What is the point of having the most expensive/current/high end computer
system for gaming and having to revert back to my 2002 built dexktop machine
running XP to play games? It doesnt make any sense.
But yes I have found a solution to the problem that is haunting everyone. I
do not take credit for this Hotfix but I do reccomend it.
Step 1---->Uninstall Windows Vista
Step 2---->Gather all Vista disks/software
Step 3---->Install disks in the Garbage
Step 4---->Insert Windows XP installation disk
Step 5---->Install Windows XP
Step 6---->Update all drivers for XP
Step 7---->Enjoy your Games with confidence in your OS
Ammazingly this is the perfect fix for this issue and I believe the only
logical one until Microsoft starts listening and does something about it.
Until this issue is fixed I predict alot of Vista owners (esecially gamers)
are going to revert to XP.
Maybe this and other reasons are why I always hear bad things about Windows
Vista. Seriously get it together!
I recently had the opportunity to talk to a rep at an Apple store here in
Denver. I told him I was a long time PC/Windows user. He smiled. I then
told him of all of the problems I am having with Vista. He smiled again and
said: "When you buy a product it should be user friendly, reliable and most
implortantly work the way it is supposed to." This little statement got me
thinking. Microsoft makes nothing that is:
1. User Friendly
2. Reliable
3. Works the way it is supposed to
I have had enough of Microsoft. I am done. Buying Vista was the last
opportunity Microsoft had at keeping me as a customer. When I was at the
Apple store I had the opportunity to play with a Mac. The interface was
incredible and very user friendly. Every application I opened not only
opened fast, but stayed there until I decided to close it and amazingly
worked the way it was supposed to. Opening up Google Earth on my Vista PC
would result in an immediate freeze, flickering screen and then a message
"Display Driver Stopped Responding and has Successfully Recovered". When I
opened Google Earth on the Mac I got... well, Google earth. No flickering
screens, no freeze ups, just the program. It was so refreshing. There were
also no "Cancel or allow" messages, no problems with the Internet browser
(mine just stops working every so often) and I even had a rep at the store
show and tell me all about it. Here at the giant old MS, you have to pay for
help that is, well not really helpful.
So, for Christmas this year, I'm asking Santa for a nice shiny Mac! I would
donate my old PC to some poor school district, but it would be more of a
headache and costlly to them than it's worth. So I'm gonna set it on fire
and watch it burn. That's what you should do with junk.
Mark my words down. Microsoft will go the way of AT&T, KMart, IBM and the
rest of the ye big old companies that just won't listne to their customers.
Apple will prevail and in the next 20 years, we'll all be using Macs.
Microsoft will be giving it's software away on some obscure internet website.
Branding is important. Standing behind that brand is even more important.
Guys, there is a solution and it's name is Apple.
Take care.

When you burn your system, please let me know in advance and I will share
with you the battering of my 8 month old laptop as I run it over with my car,
let my kids beat it with a bat and then I too will set it ablaze. I am sorry
for your computer problems- but I am so very happy to know that I am NOT
insane!
I will also be calling for a Mac from Apple!
Also I set all RAM speeds to Auto even though the motherboard (P5Q-Pro)
selects slower speeds than specified on the RAM itself. The video card uses
ordinary RAM if its own memory is exhausted as far as I remember.
I don't know which of the two above really solved the problem, but now the
driver works.
Specs: MB:Asus P5Q-Pro, CPU:Intel E8400, RAM:2x2GB Corsair CL4 800MHz,
VGA:Asus GeForce 8600 GT Silent 512 MB
Ive disabled this crappy tdrlevel (which is the system that notices
(wrongly) that the display driver has stopped responding and recovered ..
just copy and paste this regkey and run it..
and youre done.. happy gaming :-)
--------------------------------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers]
"TdrLevel"=dword:00000000
-------------------------------------------
I'm running Vista Ultimate 64bit with Geforce 8800GTX OC on a intell D975XB
board wiith 4gigs of ram and I get this display bug everytime I load a game
or sometimes even just browsing the net or watching a video.
I've tried every driver nvidia has available, updated bios, updated the
chipset, replaced the board, ran a memory test (everything was fine), the
power levels seem good checking through BIO's (Running a BFG 650 watt power
supply), even got the video card replaced through BFG's RMA. I've formated
the HD reloaded windows and updated it, reinstalled all the drivers still get
the same bug.
This isnt something I've always had a problem with, the problem happened
maybe once every few months for the past year and a half a quick reboot
always seemed to have fixed it. Now all of a sudden 3 or 4 weeks ago its
become a non stop problem where I cant even use the computer anymore.
I started with an 8800GTX, now I got a HD 4870, and with both cards I got
the nvlddmkm.dll AND atikmdag.sys error.....
And still no solution from MS or ATI, so I could have burned my money
instead of buying high-end hardware.
Microsoft????????

Though this problem is not as bad as it was a year ago, I believe some of us
still have it and often. This is certainly not a fix, but I have found a
significant symptom. If you are running anything even remotely graphics
intensive at full screen (game, movie, etc.) then a notification that pops up
on your desktop will often cause this error to occur (these pop ups usually
show up on the right side of your taskbar where your running programs are
displayed). I notice that while playing a game or watching a movie sometimes
xfire would update and send a notification causing one of these pop ups. Now
not always, but often this would lead to a display driver error. It's also
occured when Microsoft update triggers, and that notification is popped onto
the desktop. Also, when the error occurs, another one of these pop ups shows
up telling us "Display driver nvkddmkm....", then your computer tries to
redraw your screen. You usually don't see this message because your screen
has gone black, but it is there nonetheless. Once the screen is redrawn,
another error almost always follows, causing another message to pop, leading
to and chain of these errors that either crashes your program or the entire
computer altogether. I've been able to turn notifications like this off on
some programs, but not all of them seem to have this option. If there is a
permanent way to disable all such notifications I'd like to know how. This
error also seems much more likely to occur after the computer has "been
sleeping" and then returned to working status. Even changing your power
options and/or setting your performance options to highest seems to affect
this minutely. But it's been quite long enough for the graphics card
manufactures and Microsoft to eliminate this bug/error.

Hundreds of thousands of Nvidia cards are out there on the market. Don't you
think the market share is big enough to fix this?
BTW....I tried to purchase XP and was told you can't. Its not being sold
anymore, even through Microsoft. So we're stuck. I'm going to see if I can
find a video card that's not PNY but it makes you think Microsoft wants them
to fail, hm... there's something to think of ...
If you have a gateway computer:
1. go to this website http://support.gateway.com/support/default.aspx
2. go to drivers and downloads
3. enter ur serial number on your computer
4. find the display driver
5. download it
6. run setup
7. WALA ITS FIXED
Far too much guessing is going on imho. This is potentially dangerous and
could leadin to other problems either now or later down the track.
What is disapointing however is the absolute lack of information available
from either Microsoft, ati/amd or nVidia for a solution or fix to this
long-stanfding problem.
I am not that far from doing an annual clean install hower I will point out
that running the same machine under Ubuntu Linux presents no issues
whatsoever. For that reason alone, I won't be bothered upgrading to Windows 7
as I understand the problem exists also with those users.
I don't find it so difficult to resist Microsoft's marketing hype about
Window's 7 as I have seen it all before with their prior os releases. Me
thinks the Sales & Marketing machine @ Microsoft have had too much say for
too long and it's time to revert to good old fashion business practices. A
good start would be to stop releasing new "updated" operating systems when
the old ones never worked properly, and 2) After release of such os's, stop
turning your users into unpaid psuedo beta-testers after charging exhorbitant
prices for the product in the first place. Microsoft might as well turn their
code into open source and be done with it.
My trek for an absolute solution continues.....

Vini Vedi Vista
I came, I Saw, I use Vista
I am now using windoze 7 64 bit. Looks like there is not a solution possible
for this
problem, and we just have to all shut up and take it.
WOW amazing...
I sent my card (8800 Gtx OC) back to BFG and they replaced it and I never
got the error again. Never reinstalled drivers or anything... so I know at
least in my case that it was a video hardware issue. I hope this is helpful
to readers.
