I am currently using PhotoDraw to edit digital photographs which I have
loved because it is so easy to use. My version is now nine years old.

I have a trial download of Photoshop Elements 7 which I am finding is very
difficult to use, at least for me. Does Microsoft have any photo editing
software that competes with Adobe or Corel (Elements, Paint Shop Pro,
Photoimpact)? Thanks for any information.

There was an excellent image editing program
called MS Digital Image but it was discontinued
after the 2006 release.

Try the following freebie...you may find it to be useful:

FastStone Image Viewer

Hi John,

Thanks for your reply. I found a free download for something called
"Microsoft Digital Image Starter Edition". It shows that you only get the
full functionality for 60 days and then you must upgrade to Digital Image
Suite. However, when I clicked on the link to find out more about that it
was dead. I guess that's what you meant about discontinued .

Anyway, this program seems fine for my needs. Obviously I've only used it
for a few hours and so don't know much about it yet. I am not sure if this
is version 9 or 10 or even which version might be more desirable. It does
have the same sort of "feel" that PhotoDraw had which is what I want.

Do you have any idea how this might compare with the power and functionality
that is provided by Adobe Elements 7, PhotoImpact or Paint Shop Pro?

You may be able to find a copy of one of the
2006 versions of MS Digital Image Suite at
an online site like Amazon or Ebay. Support
for DIS 2006 continues until 2010.

Digital Image Suite 2006

MS Digital Image Suite is an excellent image
editing program that I personally prefer over
any I have tried. It's too bad that MS decided
to discontinue the product line.

Look for.....
"Microsoft Digital Image Suite 2006"
(there is a Vista compatibility patch
available for this version)

or...
"Microsoft Digital Image Suite Plus"
(Includes a copy of Pinnacle Studio Ver: 10)

or...
"Microsoft Digital Image Suite 2006
Anniversary Edition" (this version is
optimized for Vista and doesn't require
the patch)

This software line has been discontinued
but it may be possible to find copies at
online sites like eBay and Amazon.

I just checked the Life Cycle for DIS 2006
and they have changed it to : 1/13/2009
http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?LN=en-us&p1=9358&x=14&y=10

So...if you purchase the 2006 version...
there will be no free MS Support.

I started using PaintShop Pro and bought every new version up to version 8.  It was sold to a different company after that and was not as user friendly, but version 8 is still the best software I've used.  You can still buy it in the box at a decent price on eBay and in fact I just bought a new disc of it because I thought I'd lost mine....then I remembered I loaned it to my grandson... LOL... now I have two but that's okay, I'll have a backup if I need it.
