I am trying to make the background transparent of a png (I scanned this so
if PNG isn't good I can easily set it to another format). I went into the
Help file, but all it said to do was to trim part of the photo, then paste
it back into a new "document"--but the photo itself still had a background
color. How do I remove the background? I also tried to make it transparent,
but all that did was remove the front part of the photo--I want to keep that
part.

I guess you are trying to create a cutout...in
other words...an irregular shape that can be
used in other documents and not have a
background surrounding it.

Try the following steps:

How to save a cutout as a separate object:

First, choose the Freehand Selection Tool
and carefully outline your subject by Left click
/ Dragging your Pointer. Just think of carefully
cutting out a paperdoll with scissors.

After you define your selection (cutout), copy
the selected object by typing...Ctrl+C...
(Also...you can add the cutout as a separate
layer to the original image by typing...Ctrl+D)

Now... open a blank canvas by left clicking
the "New" button (or Ctrl+N)...and Paste the
cutout...Ctrl+V...the blank will autofit the cutout.

You can smooth the edges of your finished
cutout by going to...Effects / Edges / Soft...
one or two points should do it.

So the simple steps are...

1) Define your selection with the
Advanced Selection tools...
2) Ctrl+C
3) Ctrl+N
4) Ctrl+V

Now you can open the image that you wish
to add the cutout to and drag the cutout onto
it. The cutout can be resized by dragging the
corner handles and repositioned by dragging
the 4-way arrow. Also...a selected object can
be nudged into position with your arrow keys.

Yes...saving as .png should preserve the
transparency.

OK let me clarify. I have a signature of a famous person and would like to
take away the white background of it (make it transparent) and then be able
to copy/paste it onto documents as a prank. So what I really want to do, is
to eliminate teh white background created. When I crop using DI 2006, and
then paste onto a new canvass, I can't seem to eliminate the background. Is
there any way to do this?

Same basic principal as the previous instructions
with a few adjustments...

OK just select the 'Magic Wand' and left click
the white background to define the signature.

On the Magic Wand Pallette...at Selection mode...
select the + this will allow you to add additional
sections if portions of the image are left out like
the inside of a letter for example.

When you have the Signature fully defined (outlined)...

Left click...Invert...

Now...

Ctrl+D
Ctrl+C
Ctrl+N
Ctrl+V

Also go to...Effects / Edges / Soft...and apply 1
or 2 points to clean up the edges.

Then...File / Save As...in the .png or .gif format.

If you want to change the color of the selected
signature...go to...Effects / Fill with texture or color...
select a color and click...Done.

Great. That did it. It took me a while to realize that that wand affected
all the area that I wanted to make transparent that was not bordered by a
line (meaning I had to go inside each letter and click to wipe out that
space). Easy enough when you've done it once. OK thanks a lot John.
