About 5 years ago my wife bought her new computer running under Windows 98.
Until the last few days this computer was never connected to the Internet, it
therefore has also never been updated. When she decided to connect it now to
the Internet, I proposed her to install a Firewall/Antivirus program. The one
I have chosen states to run also on Windows 98. When trying to install it the
program requested an Internet Explorer version of at least 5.01 and aborted.
On the Web page from Microsoft I found IE6 for down load. I tried to install
this version, but this resulted in a system crash. Somehow we got the
computer working again, but without being able to use Internet Explorer.
Probably we could get the correct version from the computer's recovery CDs.
But here we have an other problem. We are for about one more year living
abroad. This recovery CD is together with the rest of our household in a
storehouse some thousands of kilometres away.

What can we do in this situation to get a working Internet Explorer (until
this computer gets replaced in about a year) ?

Was that really a *new* computer? It should have never been sold with Win98
at that time. Shudder.

Reinstall. Frankly, when you decided to put that machine on the Internet to
get IE6 it probably got infected by a worm within ten minutes. *That* may
have actually been what crashed your PC or your IE. Of course, it's also
possible that you are lucky and your PC is not infected yet. There's no way
to detect that from here. Your best bet really is to reinstall the system.
The standard option for getting rid of a hosed IE setup is to revert back to
the earlier IE installation in control panel/software.
Sorry, I can't help you better.
BTW: as the "german" in this newsgroup suggests, this is a German spoken
newsgroup ;-) You may want to try in an English *Win98* group. Maybe someone
can help you there with Win98-specifics.

Hallo Kai

Gruss MET
