USB hot swap problem

Hi can anyone advise me? when ever i connect a usb removable storage device
to my pc, everything is fine at first, then if i tke it out, and reconect
it, the system seams to lock up, removing the divice frees up my system.

If i log off and log back in with the device connected everthing is fine
again until i hot swap the device. very impractical and annoying.
the mem sticks usb hard drives are all fine on other systems..
