Hi

I am still having massive problems using my tape library with DPM. I have a
HP MSL 2024 tape library with 23 tapes and 1 cleaning tape in.

I can use it no problem with Backup Exec as I was having so many problems
with DPM so I installed it on the DPM server to test it and I could erase,
inventory and most importantly back files up. I didn't have 1 single
problem. I have uninstalled all the Backup exec software to try DPM again
and I cannot even erase a tape. It comes up with the following error

DPM could not reserve the drive resource because one of required drive
resources is not online or it needs cleaning or servicing. (ID 24052)

It is getting quite desperate to have this tape backup working.

Thanks
Rob

Just an update, when I just tried to do an iinventory my whole tape library
has now disappeared and says "There are no libraies configured to be used by
Data Protection Manager. Click on Rescan to identify the attached libraries."

I have tried rescanning it, closing DPM and reopening it. I had to reboot
the server to get it to display it.

The tape library has got the latest firmware and drivers installed and like
I said it is absolutely fine with Backup Exec.

Is Tape library visible in device manager even after rescan?
make sure no other application is using a tape library, check for RSM or
other backup apps installed on your server.

Thanks,
Sachin

Yes it was visible in device manager. Nothing else is using the library.
The library is back now it just doesn't work.

- Is the library - Drive mapping is correct?
- Can you please explain "It just doesn’t work" in detail?
- What are the library related jobs failed, what are the error details?

Thanks,
Sachin

I have done a rescan and the library is there. I did a fast inventory which
was successful. I then right click on a tape and select erase and the job
fails more or less straight away with

DPM could not reserve the drive resource because one of required drive
resources is not online or it needs cleaning or servicing. (ID 24052)

This happens on any tape. I had no problems using Backup exec before I
removed it. I had the same problem as now before I installed Backup exec. I
only installed it to prove the tape library worked ok which it did and that
the problem must be with DPM.

Thanks
Rob

It sounds like Backup Exec clobbered one of the support files for the tape
drive. Have you tried updating the drivers?

That's good, but have you reinstalled the drivers since uninstalling
Symantec?

Also, restart the DPMLA service, perform Rescan and detailed inventory......

I have tried that and still no joy.

To make sure the tape drive was still working after putting the latest
drivers on again I installed BAckup exec again using exisiting drivers and
not the symantec drivers and everything worked straight away, Erasing backing
up inventorying etc. I uninstalled Everything to do with Backup Exec and
rebooted the server. When it came back up I did a rescan and retarted the
DMPLA service. I cannot erase/identify or do anything except a fast
inventory I am still getting

Failed to perform the operation since the tape (LT0023L3) is not available
in Tape Library Hewlett Packard MSL G3 Series library (x64 based) (ID 24050)

DPM could not reserve the drive resource because one of required drive
resources is not online or it needs cleaning or servicing. (ID 24052)

Have you seen this thread?

Since you are installing and uninstalling everything, it won't hurt you to
try this option :-).
