I noticed that others have had this issue, no real solution provided yet.

I have too started to experience this issue on 1 of 2 of my independant DPM
servers.

Rebuilding the DPM server is not a solution as there are too many protection
groups and volumes to reconfigure.

When I attempt to start the Mgmt console, I receive this error:

Connection to the DPM service has been lost.

DPM service could be running in recovery mode, which was initiated by the
DpmSync tool. If DpmSync is not running and the DPM service is still in
recovery mode, then run DpmSync again.
Review the application event log for information about a possible
service shutdown. Verify that the following services are not disabled:
DPM
DPM Replication Agent
SQLAgent$MS$DPM2007$
MSSQL$MS$DPM2007$
Virtual Disk Service
Volume Shadow Copy

ID: 917

I have manually backed up the MSDPM databse and verified that all local
databases are not suspect via SQL Mgmt Studio.

Rebooting has not resolved the issue.

Ran DPMSync - sync ... issue still occurring.

Thousands of entries like below are in the Application Event Log.

Hi,
I have exact the same problem and are not able to set up a fresh system, too.
I found a lot of people with exact the same problem, but no solution.
I'm waiting for a reply to this post.

Hi,

When you consistently see the error dialog box 'DPM connection lost....' on
opening the DPM UI, it is indicative of a persistent DPM engine crash. This
means there is something wrong with the DPMDB.

1. Look up the watson dump created because of the crash: This would be under
your '<windows>\PCHealth\ErrorRep\QSignoff' folder or '<Documents and
Settings\user>\local settings\applicationsdata\pchealth\errorrep\qsignoff\'.
Please extract the xml in the cab file created and post it here.

2. Look up the DPM error logs. Can you please look up the error logs of DPM
at <DPM Installation Path\dpm>? Please look up the MSDPM error log
pertaining to the time you see the crash.

3. Please open SQL Management studio and fire a query on the DPMDB: select *
from tbl_te_tasktrail where executionstate not in (2,3)

thanks,

There are no logs.

There are a lot of DPM error logs.
Here are the last entries of the newest log (I did not cut the last line.
This must have come from the crash):

Hi Bernd ,

Is DPM still crashing when you open the DPM UI? If yes then there watson
reports created in the path mentioned. Its strange if its not being
created.Do you have error reporting turned on your server? Its a memory dump
thats created.

For the DPM logs, just try looking up MSDPM.errlog for the time pertaining
to your crash. And please find lines corresponding to your crash time. The
time displayed in the logs is GMT.

and lastly can you please modify the query to : select verbid,
executionstate, laststatename from tbl_te_tasktrail where executionstate not
in (2,3)

This will help only if you are consistently seeing crash and are unable to
bring your DPM UI up.

Thanks,

Hi,

I have exactly same error.
But for me the console crashes when I try to install agents.

This is a newly installed server (win 2003 x86) with remote sql 2005 server.
I already applied sp 1

The problem is the msdpm service crashes without any specific reason.

But How can I solve this?

I already executed following sql commend.

select * from tbl_te_tasktrail where executionstate not in (2,3)

No output generated.

Thanks in advance

grtz.

Hi,
Without any updates applied to the systems. Our server 2008 server , running local sql 2005 standard edition with sp2. 1 day all grean and next day no service. Server is connect to 3 deu's . Total storage capacity around 15 TB. And protected groups occupy 14TB.
The patch level of the dpm was 8836. Restart server or dpm service did not work. Then I found a new hotfix from microsoft website. Which updated the dpm to patch level 8851. And magically all the exception messages disappeared. And DPM service started working. It might save someone 4 hours of their life.

Hi,
I have exact the same problem and are not able to set up a fresh system, too.

3. Please open SQL Management studio and fire a query on the DPMDB: select *

from tbl_te_tasktrail where executionstate not in (2,3)

thanks,

Hi there,

Sorry to jump into this thread however I am having the exact same problem and I do get a 1 line result from the following sql query.

select verbid,
executionstate, laststatename from tbl_te_tasktrail where executionstate not
in (2,3)

Result is

84021B5E-B4DC-9B27-2B7E-3B99BB1225FF,0,NULL

What does this result mean, and how do I fix the problem?

Cheers,

Shane

Hi,
Without any updates applied to the systems.
It might save someone 4 hours of their life.

resolved the issue

Hi,
Without any updates applied to the systems.

I am getting this all of the sudden on 4 of my DPM's. The ones getting the error are currently on 2.0.8836.0. I am unable to upgrade them to 2.0.8861.0.

When I run this query....

select verbid,
executionstate, laststatename from tbl_te_tasktrail where executionstate not
in (2,3)

It returns message...

Msg 5242, Level 22, State 1, Line 1

Hi there,

Sorry to jump into this thread however I am having the exact same problem and I do get a 1 line result from the following sql query.

select verbid,
executionstate, laststatename from tbl_te_tasktrail where executionstate not
in (2,3)

Result is

84021B5E-B4DC-9B27-2B7E-3B99BB1225FF,0,NULL

What does this result mean, and how do I fix the problem?

Cheers,

Shane

Same problem is occuring for me
Hi there,

Sorry to jump into this thread however I am having the exact same problem and I do get a 1 line result from the following sql query.

select verbid,
executionstate, laststatename from tbl_te_tasktrail where executionstate not
in (2,3)

Result is

84021B5E-B4DC-9B27-2B7E-3B99BB1225FF,0,NULL

What does this result mean, and how do I fix the problem?

Cheers,

Shane

Hi Janelle,
The error below seems to be from SQL Server and indicating that there's a
corruption that SQL is finding in the DBs. Please let me know the following:
1. Can you check for any error events in the application event log from
source=MSDPM? Please paste back the details for us. That might help confirm
the issue.
2. Are your DPMs linked together to share a library by any chance? Or are
they hosted on the same machine/hardware?
3. Any other events that might indicate a corruption of data on the disk
that hosts the SQL DBs?

resolved the issue
Hi,
Without any updates applied to the systems.

Same problem is occuring for me
Hi there,

Sorry to jump into this thread however I am having the exact same problem and I do get a 1 line result from the following sql query.

select verbid,
executionstate, laststatename from tbl_te_tasktrail where executionstate not
in (2,3)

Result is

84021B5E-B4DC-9B27-2B7E-3B99BB1225FF,0,NULL

What does this result mean, and how do I fix the problem?

Cheers,

Shane

DPM Error 917

I am getting this all of the sudden on 4 of my DPM's. The ones getting the error are currently on 2.0.8836.0. I am unable to upgrade them to 2.0.8861.0.

When I run this query....

select verbid,
executionstate, laststatename from tbl_te_tasktrail where executionstate not
in (2,3)

It returns message...
