I've been testing out replicating data from a file server.. same domain,
same room etc.. gigabit connection (2003 x86 server is the source, while the
DPM is 2003 x64 sp2)..

After about 1hr 4 minutes though.. the agent actually stopped responding for
some reason.. I received:

DPM failed to communicate with the protection agent on server.domain.local
because the agent is not responding (ID: 43 Details: internal code
0x8099090E)

targetserver.domain.local.

Both machines are behind a firewall and local, same domain.

are you able to ping the dpm server from the production server?
can you check with the event viewer on the production server and check
whether you can see any error/warning events related to dpmra or net work
communications.

I tried uninstalling the agent, then re-installing.. but its still failing
after so many minutes.. this time around 40 minutes in.. here are some logs:

(I didn’t see anything of value on the backup server app logs).. I did see
these in the DPM alerts:

EventID:1, source DPM-EM

The replica of D:\ on pstdc.domain.local is inconsistent with the protected
data source. All protection activities for data source will fail until the
replica is synchronized with consistency check. (ID: 3163)
DPM failed to communicate with the protection agent on pstdc.domain.local
because the agent is not responding. (ID: 43)

I could ping pstdc (the production server with the replica we are trying to
“replicate”) just fine from both ends..

On pstdc, I found this error in the event viewer under application:

9:40pm
EventID 85, source DPMRA:

A DPM agent failed to communicate with the DPM service on

backup01.domain.local because of a communication error. Make sure that
backup01.pst.local is remotely accessible from the computer running the DPM
agent. If a firewall is enabled on backup01.domain.local, make sure that it
is not blocking requests from the computer running the DPM agent (Error code:
0x800706ba, full name: backup01.domain.local).

About 8 minutes before this message there was this one.. which I’m confused
on, as this server doesn’t have exchange on it:

Source ESENT
EventID: 215

tcpsvcs (412) The backup has been stopped because it was halted by the
client or the connection with the client failed.

(started the backup process around 8:20 pm)
Going back further in time, to about 9pm , still while the backup was
running via DPM: (our production file server is also an sms 2007 server), I’m
guessing this is just because I was running the backup:

EventID 5438
Source SMS Server
On 11/12/2007 9:00:02 PM, component SMS_MP_CONTROL_MANAGER on computer PSTDC
reported: MP Control Manager detected MP is not responding to HTTP requests.
The http error is 2147500037.

Possible cause: MP service is not started or not responding.
Solution: Manually restart the SMS Agent Host service on the MP.

Possible cause: IIS service is not responding.
Solution: Manually restart the W3SVC service on the MP.

Probably non related, but throughout the day in System.. I have a lot of odd
Kerberos errors like this one:

(eventid 4):
The kerberos client received a KRB_AP_ERR_MODIFIED error from the server
PST066$. The target name used was RPCSS/PST062.domain.local. This indicates
that the password used to encrypt the kerberos service ticket is different
than that on the target server. Commonly, this is due to identically named
machine accounts in the target realm (domain.LOCAL), and the client realm.
Please contact your system administrator.

That’s about all I really see on either end.

I think I mentioned it before.. but this pstdc is also our GC/DC/DNS/DHCP
server, pstdc2 acts as a backup to these as well.

I'm at a loss as to why it keeps timing out.

Thanks

I'm guessing it's a bit late as it has been several months since the last post, but I just created a blog on this and since the errors are the same, it may be what you are running into.

Bottom line is this same error is coming up when you try to do a restore to a share as opposed to a drive/folder on the target server.

http://blogs.technet.com/b/dpm/archive/2011/03/02/restoring-a-sharepoint-item-with-data-protection-manager-2010-lesson-learned.aspx

The blog is specific to restoring SharePoint, but the idea is the same and likely applies in your situation. You can even verify by checking the dpmra*.errlog on the machine you are restoring to (as noted in the blog).

Hope this helps.
