Tape backup failed after indicating that 18.75 MB of data transferred.
Synchronization and shadow copy to disk is working fine but I'm unable to get
a backup to tape. I am using Dell PowerVault 122T Autoloader with 8 slots.

My last attempts came back with warnings: 'Free tape threshold exceeded' and
'Library not functioning efficiently'. Are there any special setup needed for
the tape autoloader?

Did the library work with a different product on this same machine? I
had problems with an autoloader due to a bad SCSI cable. Check the Event
log for any errors with the tape driver.

I'm using an ADIC FastStor2 autoloader that appears to be the same as
the PV122T. Works like a charm for about a month now, backups and restores.

Don,

Can you check if the library is visible to the OS through "devmgmt.msc" as a
Medium Changer and Tape Drives which have the right drivers installed?

If they do, then do a "Rescan" from the Library Management UI and retry your
backup?

The Medium changer and Tape Drives are visible in devise mgr, I've tried a
re-scan but backup to tape still failed. I have arcserve installed on this
server and backup to tape works fine.

ps. I did stop all arcserve services before attempting to backup to tape
using DPM.

Don,

When the tape backup fails what is the detailed error code that you see on
the job and the alert which is raised for the same?

Free Media (media resource) is unavailable to continue with task execution.
(ID 24050).

The option to 'Mark tape as free' is greyed out.

Don,

You need to:
0) Go to Library Management UI
1) Inventory the media in the library (choose detailed inventory)
2) Free a media by clicking on it and freeing it OR add a blank tape to the
library.
3) Run archive.

Your backups are failing since no media is available to write to. In Beta2
we have fixed the "18.75 MB" buffering which we were doing even without
having media / drive to write to.

There are 2 tape in the library both of which are blank and the status shows
up as available.

The status of drive however is 'in use', and as previously I do not have the
option to free the tape.

How do I 'Run archive'?

I am having the stame trouble. I can import the tapes from IE, I can export
the tapes and when I do a detailed inventory on any of the tapes I get the
following error...

"An unexpected error occured during job execution. (ID 104 Details:
Incorrect function (0x800700001))"

The tapes show as "Tape Available" in the Status column, in the details,
however the barcode is correct and the tape status is "In use" and I am not
able to mark the tape as free.

HELP!

This is a Dell ML6000 powervault tape drive.

BF,

This is a different issue. Can you tell us what tape drive type you are
using? We've seen this on some LTO tape drives and the issue goes away by
using the ltotape.sys driver.

We have fixed the issue which caused the alternate driver not to work in
Beta2 as well.

Thanks, it is a DELL ML6000 PowerVault Tape Library with IBM LTO3 drives (2

Can you reply to this and provide a link to that file. I think I may need
to try it because just as BF posted, I now get taht exact same erorr and we
have the exact same tape drive. So I want to install that ltotape.sys file,
but I cant locate it off the windows server CD, nor could I find a legit site
that offers the file to be downloaded. Can you provide?

Here are the steps to install the ltotape.sys inbox driver:

1) Open devmgmt.msc.
2) Select tape drive.
3) Choose "Update Driver"
4) Next Screen of looking for a driver on the internet. Choose "No, not this
time"
5) Next Screen of looking for a location. Choose Advanced option of choosing
a specific location.
6) Next Screen of options to search. Choose "Don't Search. I will find it
myself".
7) Next Screen. Uncheck the option to Show Compatible drivers.
8) Choose "LTO" from the list which shows up.
9) Complete Wizard and install.

You will need to do this for every LTO drive which you have on the machine.

Once again Kapil, you come thru! I followed your instructions and I was able
to install that LTO driver for my tape drive. My drive within the DPM seems
to be working okay. It can complete the inventory, I have identified my
cleaning tapes, but some tapes I have come up "unknown" even after I perform
a detailed inventory. And the feature to "erase" the tapes is never "greyed"
out. Just curious, is there a reason why the DPM can not take control of the
tapes, or not until a job is performed to write to a tape will it then allow
me to erase it?

Sorry folks, I had a typo on my previous post.

The option to erase the tape is ALWAYS greyed out.

Andy,

We will only allow erasing tapes which we recognize so the tape needs to be
inventoried before we can erase it.

Can you tell us what happens when you click on the "Unknown" tapes and run a
detailed inventory on it? Go to the Monitoring TAB - Jobs View and look at
whether the detailed inventory succeeds or not. If it fails let us know the
details of the error which you see.

Sorry about the step by step progress which you are making. Some of these
issues have been nailed in Beta2, so you should have a much smoother
experience in the forthcoming releases of the product.

Then after trying to perform a "cleaning" job of the drive I get this one:

I have a lot of faith in this product so far. It really makes the shadow
copy of backups real easy, and just like any application it takes tweaking
and adjustments to get it right. I think most of us are almost "there" in
sense of getting it setup right, and I know once I get the jobs to start
moving to tapes, I know my management and I will highly consider using the
DPM for all our backups here at the Medicine School at USC. I cant thank you
enough for you and your team's help and assistance.

Andy,

Thanks for the patience. Can you download the MPSRPT tool from the connect
website and get us a trace for the Detailed Inventory on the library?

The MPSRPT has a document along with it and you need to follow the
instructions in it step by step. Once you have the trace, send me mail on
Kapil dot Malhotra AT microsoft dot com so that I can create an FTP share
for you to upload the traces to.

Also in the interim, it looks like detailed inventory has succeeded on some
media. These tape will have a label starting with (Imported) If you mark
them free, you should be able to make progress on the tape backups.
