I am having a new problem with DPM 2007 SP1 (with all Hotfixes applied). I
have recently upgraded my W2K8 SP2 DPM Server to W2K8 R2 (inplace upgrade)
and my W2K8 SP2 Production Server to W2K8 R2 as well. Now the DPM server is
giving me this error message whenever I tried to do a consistency check on
some files on the production server:
The VSS application writer or the VSS provider is in a bad state. Either it
was already in a bad state or it entered a bad state during the current
operation. (ID 30111 Details: Unknown error (0x80042308) (0x80042308))
Recommended action: Please check that the Event Service and the VSS service
are running, and check for errors associated with these services in the
Application Event Log on the server mediaserver.medianet.intern. Please allow
10 minutes for VSS to repair itself and then retry the operation.
I have already tried restarting both servers.
In the Application eventlog of the production server I have this entry in
the eventlog:
Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Volume/disk not connected or not found.
Error context:
DeviceIoControl(\\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy1 -
000000000000013C,0x0053c198,00000000001CA7C0,0,00000000001CED30,4096,[0]).
Operation:
Processing PostFinalCommitSnapshots
Context:
Execution Context: System Provider
I don´t understand this eventlog entry. The drive where the protected data
resides is still there so why is VSS complaining about a missing drive ?
Can I somehow solve that problem without removing and readding all the data
to the protection group again ? (Its almost 4 TB of data)
Thanks,
Alex
things are not getting better. Im am getting different VSS errors now:
The first one is:
Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Volume/disk not connected or not found.
Error context:
CreateFileW(\\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy11,0xc0000000,0x00000003,...).
Operation:
Processing PostFinalCommitSnapshots
Context:
Execution Context: System Provider
Following this one I get this error:
Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Volume/disk not connected or not found.
Error context:
DeviceIoControl(\\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy13 -
0000000000000170,0x0053c198,00000000002D69D0,0,00000000002D59C0,4096,[0]).
Operation:
Processing PostFinalCommitSnapshots
Context:
Execution Context: System Provider
I have already reregisterd all VSS dlls using this script:
Cd "%windir%\system32"
Net stop vss
Net stop swprv
regsvr32 /s ole32.dll
regsvr32 /s oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 /s vss_ps.dll
Vssvc /Register
regsvr32 /s /i swprv.dll
regsvr32 /s /i eventcls.dll
regsvr32 /s es.dll
regsvr32 /s stdprov.dll
regsvr32 /s vssui.dll
regsvr32 /s msxml.dll
regsvr32 /s msxml3.dll
regsvr32 /s msxml4.dll
After that I have restarted both Production and DPM server. Can someone help
please ?
Thanks,
Alex
Things are getting worse. My two SQL databases on the production server also
cannot be backuped up anymore. I get the following error messages in the

Jesus, why is backing up files such a problem after the upgrade to R2 ?
Everything else on the production server works fine (Hyper-V, AD, SQL 2008,
fileserver etc.) Just backups don´t work anymore.
I could really need some help here !
Thanks, guys !
Alex
PLEASE !!!
Why the upgrade to R2? Is that an MS-approved platform for DPM? To resolve
any DPM issues? Personally, I've had tons of problems with DPM on 2008, I
believe 2003 x64 is the only viable platform for DPM, but haven't tried R2
yet.

I have had no problems with Server 2008 and DPM so I was bold and wanted to
try R2 since my experience with Windows 7 has been so good over the last few
months.
As for your suggestion: what do you mean by modifying the protection group
and clicking next next etc. ?
I would like to keep my backups and not have to readd them to the group so
how will modifying the group help ? Is there a way to change the identifier
of theprotected discs or the backups on the DPM server`?
Bye,
Alex

I dont think there is a vss hotfix for windows server 2008 r2? After all it
was just released a few weeks ago.
Bye
Problem solved. VSS was broken because of a problem with the storage device
driver. I tried enabling snapshots of each drive on the production server and
all but worked worked fine. On the one drive I got error messages when trying
to enable VSS. I then updated the driver of the controller (a Highpoint
controller), rebooted and now VSS is working again. DPM also seems to work
fine now.
Bye,
Alex
What kind of server did you use, I have the exact same problem I'm using 4
HP server with server 2008 R2 and a hyper-v cluster.
When I make backups with DPM2010 some servers backupped oke and some don't
You said to update the storage drivers, but maybe it's a problem in the
virtual machines, maybe i need to update the vss writer inside the virtual
machines??

Can you provide more details on your scenario and the failure that you are
getting while backing up VMs using DPM 2010?
Thanks

Hope for a solution.
Can you send me an email at ansingh at microsoft dot com along with details
regarding your environment (how many CSVs/VMs and how the VM files are
distributed across CSVs), and also the error description in the DPM console.
Thanks,
