Disk Usage in DPM is insanely high, why?

I really can`t believe how disk space this product uses, as a test I created
a Protection Group with one Exchange 2007 Standard Server and setup as
follows:

DPM Server
------------

Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2
DPM 2007 SP1

Protection Group
------------------

Retention Range = 1 day
Sync freq = Every 15 minutes

Express full backup = 20:00 Everyday

Now here`s the result:

Current Store size=74.7GB
Replica volume - Allocated = 96.90 GB
Replica volume - Used = 80.87 GB

Recovery point volume - Allocated = 150 GB
Recovery point volume - Used = 145 GB

Why is this using so much space, 225GB to backup 1 store for 1 day? Surely
either I have made a gross error with my configuration somewhere or DPM is
misbehaving.

This server isn`t a one off, I`ve added other Exchange Servers (2003 Std and
2007 Std) to this same Protection Group and seen similar bloated storage
usage.

Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening?

Thanks in advance.

u replica too oftten, ie every 15 minutes

Sync freq = Every 15 minutes. do you really require data every 15 minutes ?
How often user request to get back old data every 15 minutes ?

But surely all it`s doing is synchronising the logfiles, why would it be
different if I sync every 15 minutes or every 4 hours. Still the same amount
of logs, no?

Hi Steve,

The used volume size you have seen depends on the churn you have on the
Exchange server. So, what is the churn that is generated on Exchange server
per day.
Did you perform any specific actions on the Exchange server like moving
mailboxes from one DB to another as that creates a lot of churn.
Yes, you are correct that sync 15 mins or 4 hours does not make a
difference.
However, can you tell me the amount of data transfer taking place during
incrementals and Express full.
Did you see any of the backup job failing in the jobs view?

Thanks
