I am having a problem getting a consistency check to work on a disk volume
of a 2003 R2 server. The specific error is:

An unexpected error occurred during job execution. (ID 104 Details: The
system cannot find the file specified (0x80070002))

In the DPM error log on the server:

I checked the file on disk. It exists and I can open it just fine. I have
run several consistency checks and they all fail with this error. I am
running the latest version 2.0.8844.0

Hi,

Can you please look up the error log on the fileserver? It is located under
<DPM_Isntall_Path>\DPM. Run the Consistency Check job again and please look
up the DPMRACurr.errlog on the fileserver. Also look up the error logs on
DPM. The time in the errlog is GMT. Please look for the HR '0x80070002' and
paste the stack here. It looks like some casesensitivity issue.

Hi Hitesh,

Thanks for getting back to me. I hadn't heard back for a while so I stopped
protection and recreated it for this volume since it was critical that the
data be backed up. Things seem to be working again. If this comes back, I'll
repost from the log, but the info I pasted in the original error is from the
fileserver's DPM log and should contain everything regarding the error
(you'll see that 0x80070002 error several times in the log I pasted). Looks
like the logs have rolled since then so I don't have the original anymore.

We're seeing a similar error again on two different servers. Both are
failing the consistency check with 0x80070005 errors on .ci files in the
C:\System Volume Information\catalog.wci\ folder. I checked the servers, and
the files specified in the errors don't actually exist.

From the DPM server:

Affected area: C:\
Occurred since: 9/17/2009 5:41:19 PM
Description: The replica of Volume C:\ on xxxxxxx is inconsistent with the
protected data source. All protection activities for data source will fail
until the replica is synchronized with consistency check. You can recover
data from existing recovery points, but new recovery points cannot be
created until the replica is consistent.

For SharePoint farm, recovery points will continue getting created with the
databases that are consistent. To backup inconsistent databases, run a
consistency check on the farm. (ID 3106)

Recommended action: 1) Refer to the detailed error code in the description
above. Retry this operation after the issue has been fixed.
2) If the error was due to insufficient resources, then it could be a
transient failure and you should retry this operation after some time.

Usually when I get these errors, I can disable protection with delete, and
then recreate it and it will work just fine. However, I lose all my recovery
points which I'd like to avoid. I tried manually creating a blank text file
with the same name and putting it into that folder, but it still wouldn't
work.

Hi,

You can workaround the problem by: Under the regkey path on the file
server -
"HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\control\BackupRestore\FilesNotToBackup" add a
new multistring entry with name '"System Volume Information" and add the
value "\System Volume Information\* /s" . This ways you can avoid backing up
the 'System Volume Information' folder.
