Emails outside of the company are undeliverable

I'm not sure when this problem started but we can send emails, via CRM 3.0,
to users within the company but when we try to send them to anyone outside
the company they are rejected and the message looks like this:

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

Subject: test 4 CRM:00020003
Sent: 5/8/2007 2:10 PM

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

user...@gmail.com on 5/8/2007 2:10 PM
You do not have permission to send to this recipient. For
assistance, contact your system administrator.
<servername.domain #5.7.1 smtp;550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for
user...@gmail.com>

Obviously that is a test email but no matter which one of our sales reps
sends an email they all get kicked back if the recipient is outside our
organization.

Any ideas on where to start?

How many receipient addresses have you tested? Have you checked to be
sure that your org has not been blacklisted?

99 times out of 100 the reason for not being able to send mail
externally from CRM is the Mail server has not been set up correctly.
You can actually do this without repairing or reinstalling CRM by
editing the registry.

This would be most easily sorted out if it had never worked since you
had installed it. CRM searches for the exchange server on the local
machine 7by default, so if the exchange server is a different machine
email won't work until you have it set up.

Another hint in the error message that says it may be your Exchange
server is not set up for relaying messages is that it says in the
error, "Unable to relay for usern...@gmail.com". You should ensure
that relaying is set up on your Exchange server by following the
following steps:

1. Open IIS Manager
2. Right click on SMTP server
3. Click on the Access Tab - Then Click on Relay
4. Add in your Exchange Servers

Also worthwhile investigating is what your current settings are in the
registry. For most cases, SMTPAuthenticate is set in the registry as
requiring authentification of some sort. While you may have to talk
to someone about it to verify whether or not it can be set to
anonymous or not, I've never personally gotten it working on anything
other than anonymous access (SMTPAuthenticate = 0). Most of the other
settings don't need to be touched, other than possibly the server
used.

I hope one of the above things will help solve your problem. This is
my usual blunt-instrument, one solution fixes all problems with CRM
Exchange Mail Server. It'd be great if you can contact me on rhodeskc

Kris,

For the most part this worked. After following all the steps and adding the
Registry entries I started receiving a different error message: "Invalid
Visibility Modification Access". After following the Resolution steps for
that issue I still could not get it to work.

However, once I checked the "Attempt direct delivery before sending to Smart
Host" checkbox for the Virtual SMTP Properties it started working.

I'm not sure if this is the best method but it works so I'm going to run
with it for now.
