You no longer have spell checking capabilities in some languages in OE6
after you install Office 2007

The spell checker in Office 2007 is not compatible with OE6. Try one of
these free spell checkers instead:

TinySpell (checks spelling as you type)
http://www.tinyspell.m6.net/

I have an HP with XP laptop. When I went searching, found that with the
latest Outlook Express download, the only dictionary available was French. I
tutor French; however, most of the people I know don't know French, s that
doesn't help. I guess we could all move to Quebec. sorry I have no answer.

I have a worse problem: the links in Ourlook Express don't work. So, if I
want to check anythoing ourt that I receive in the mail, I have to copy the
address - if there is one - or go to the main website.

I too have French as (ONLY option in SpellCheck. This is Acer Netbook. I
havve not loaded Office on this, so that can't be the cause can it? This is
XP not Vista, so that option is not correct.

Does anyone know a solution in this instance: XP, no Office, French only
option. I only speak American English but often type badly on this netbook.

[Crosspost to OE General]

Are you running a French-language version of WinXP?

OE Tools | Options | Spelling | Language: Which language is selected here?

From OE Help | To check the spelling in messages: "Outlook Express uses the
spelling checker provided with the following Microsoft Office programs:
Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint. If you do not
have one of these programs installed, the Spelling command is not
available."

OE doesn't have its own Spell Check but depends on the proofing tools
included with one or more of those 3 Office (or MS Works) applications.

Bill,
Just found your old post as I was dealing with the same issue.
Found the solution on the Microsoft tips site.

Here is the link and the tip:
http://www.outlook-tips.net/archives/2006/20061228.htm

If you install Office 2007, spell checking in Outlook Express may not work
as expected, unless you want spell check in French. :) This is because Office
2007 uses new proofing tools and OE can't use them because it's designed to
use the older tools.

It's easy to fix: install just the proofing tools from your previous version
of Office (using the custom install option). You can get them from any older
Office suite or application - including FrontPage, Publisher or standalone
versions of Word, Excel, or Outlook.

To install just the proofing tools from Office 2003, run Office setup and
choose the custom option. Uncheck all programs in the list and add a check to
choose the options at the bottom of the programs list. On the next screen,
set each top level item to be Not Available (red X icon). Expand the Office
Shared Features branch and locate Proofing tools in the list. Expand proofing
tools and choose English, setting it to Run from my computer. Finish the
installation.

Once installed, restart OE - go to Tools, Options and verify Spelling is
configured to use the correct English dictionary.

Forgot to add, that the instructions are spot on, and it did cure the issue.
You do need the original CDs for the earlier version of Office.

Out of all the replies the most useful was the link to www.outlook-tips.net
that you listed. It gives a fix that most people can use. It also suggests
that there is an easy fix for MS to provide, i.e. a link to the earlier
office 2003 proofing tools on-line so anyone can sort this problem out. It is
so simple that it seems that MS can't be bothered. That is why I expect
people get angry.

It looks as though Micro Soft can no longer build reliable programs. I have
fought this so long and now have to fight trojons again. It worked before and
now MS has screwed up everything yet again. Maybe they should be forced to
buy old PC's for what we gave for them so we can get new ones and the
programs every 6 months.

it's running and it's not. How do I get rid of it?
