Problem reading posts in Discussion group

I don't know if this is the right place to post this question, but I could
not find a category that looked right. I hope I can explain this properly.

I saw a thread with a subject that looked interesting, but when I clicked on
the original post in that thread, there was no text in the message pane. It
was just blank. When I clicked on the first reply to that post, the message
pane showed the reply, as well as the quoted original post. There were a
number of messages back and forth between the original poster and people who
replied. None of the messages by the original poster contained any text and
I could only find out what they had said by reading one of the replies to
their message, because the reply contained the quote of their text.
I am using ie8 and XP, SP3. Does anyone have an explanation for this weird
thing?
