At one time I used Notepad for converting documents to straight ASCII text
for HTML coding, with very basic formatting.

I had to start using a third-party text editor because the Microsoft Notepad
started formatting the text with extra spaces and paragraph breaks, where
there were not supposed to be any. I would "Copy and Paste" HTML into
Notepad; make my changes then "Copy and Paste" the corrected text back into
the HTML.

When I open the corrected HTML I find multiple extra spaces and paragraph
breaks in the text. However, when I look at the text I have in Notepad;
Notepad shows the text as a straight line with no formatting, no Word Wrap.

I have a new Vista installation and do not have a Third-Party text Editor
for Vista yet. So, I tried to use, as recommended by many people, Notepad
for the coding. I ended up having to "Copy and Paste" the corrected text
into MS Word to find and delete the "Default Formatting" accomplished by
Notepad.

The best I can figure out is that someone put some coding into Notepad to
automatically format text with a paragraph break every 66 characters.

How can I stop this "Default Formatting"?

What happened to the Basic Non-Formated ASCII Text editing Notepad used to
have?

Thanks

Maybe something to do with "Word Wrap", under "Edit" on the menu.

This sounds similar to what I experience. AFAICT it's a bug. (If I had to
guess, I'd say that the wordwrap is done by notepad copying the text to a
buffer and inserting magic newlines... or something.) Things are okay for
me until I save, then extra newlines get inserted if I copy/paste. Very
annoying. (The saved files don't have the extra newlines, only the text
actually displayed in the window.)

As Arargh mentioned, turn off word wrap.

I have this problem all version of Windows from 98 on. I ***THINK*** that
it didn't happen in 95 or NT4, but it's been many, many years since I've
used them for much.

I haven't used notepad for very much for a number of years. I prefer a few
different 3rd party tools, most notably UltraEdit. There are a truckload of
3rd party apps that can replace notepad and work "better" than it in one
way or another.

Yes, I use "HTML-Kit - http://www.chami.com/html-kit/" when I have
to resort to editing html.
Except that there no longer seems to be a Win98 version. :-)

Usually for a quick patch, I use Win98s' "Edit.Com". Dumb, but works.

I'm so used to UltraEdit that I rather cringe at the thought of using
anything else under Windows. It lives on my thumb drive so I can take it with
me. ;-)

(In DOS, I mostly use the editor built into Norton Commander. Win98 doesn't
like my newer system -- hard drive is too big, so I use XP & Linux -- and my
older system boots into OS/2.)
