I am a beginner in working with basic on pc.
Should I work in DOS Mode or should I choose anything other under VISTA?
Thanx

Does Vista have a command prompt? If so, you could try it.

Well... It depends on your version of Vista.

If it is a x64 version of Vista, you can't run anything of 16-bit on it
(either for DOS or Windows). If it is a x32 version, maybe you can run it
(but is not much recommendable). Is better to install a Virtual Machine with
MS-DOS or Free-DOS, or run DOSBox to achieve good results with a DOS mode
programming language.

Nevertheless, if you're asking if you have to learn BASIC in DOS mode or in
Windows mode, I think that you can start with the Windows mode (with VB,
Liberty BASIC, or something like that). Being this a DOS based group for
BASIC programming, maybe you'll be answered with the DOS option (and,
believe me, is very interesting to develop applications for the command
line).

I found out the hard way that Microsoft Virtual PC will not run on all
versions of Vista. Home Premium x32 and below certainly can't run it.

When all else fails, you can always reboot into DOS. :->)

Try Sun's VirtualBox. It also lets you run a 64-bit OS on a 32-bit host as
long as your hardware supports a 64-bit OS.

I ran into this problem a few months ago and heard about dosbox.
Recently I stumbled across VirtualBox and I'm in the process of reading the
docs.
Thanks for the thumbs up Tom.

Hello friends and neighbors!
Thank you for all your friendly answers. But I still doesn't know what to
do.
Yes, I hav a DOS Window under VISTA-Ultimate. But how can I Start
BASIC-Programming in the DOSBOX?
Do I have to load basic or basica ?
Where can I read something about ?

thank you for your patience

Let me summarize for you -
A. The DOS window you refer to is more correctly called the 'Command Prompt'
B. DOSBOX is a Windows program that emulates DOS.
C. VirtualBox is a program that creates a 'virtual computer' within your
host computer. This virtual computer can boot into DOS or most other
Operating Systems you might choose - Windows ver. x, Linux, etc.

There are versions of BASIC for DOS and there are versions for Windows.
Assuming you have a DOS version you could try to run it in (A) first and
then either (B) or (C) if it won't run in (A). It will almost certainly run
in (C).

Helpful?

Then, plese use Sun VirtualBox

www.virtualbox.org

Is far better than VirtualPC... :)

Then only problem is that you cannot directly copy files from the Virtual
Machine to the host machine... But you can do a workaround creating a shared
folder in your host machine and accessing it through a virtual network
connection.
