Yes. But....
Education is about knowing where to look for answers.

LB,

I'm not one for attacking people, but as is typical you
have stepped in and offered nothing useful at all. If you
don't have anything to contribute, please do us all a favor
and keep it to yourself.

Beg to differ but there is something from on old book called The Bible
about Give a man a fish - feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish -
feed him for life.

This was not a request for specific information, but a general info
request. If the poster would learn to do his own searching he will be
FAR better off.

I guess what I left out was..

Start here http://www.deja.com or any web search engine.

LB,

Your source quote is wrong. Your "Give a man a fish - feed him for a day.
Teach a man to fish - feed him for life" quotation is definitely not
Biblical.

However, I agree that far too many people take the lazy approach instead of
trying to find the answers themselves. Perhaps your original reply could
have been a bit less cryptic however, as you noted. Sometimes a legitimate
push in the right direction is all it takes.

I've seen this bad attitude before.

I have to say that newsgroups are exactly the most productive and enjoyable
and specifically-targeted place to do research.

It hurts no one to ask.

One learns things and finds useful links in an ng that one could waste
scores of hours looking for on the internet and never find.

There is no reason for wasting time starting from scratch. Progress is made
building on the knowledge of others. Progress is made through the exchange
of ideas.

Ask on, al. That's exactly what news groups are for.

thanks for all the "positive" responses. believe it or not, lb, i did look
using various search engines for the information i required before posting
to the group. most of what i found assumed a knowledge of
compilers/assemblers/etc. which i don't have. i appreciate that it is
annoying for users of a regular newsgroup to find messages that seem
basic/irrelevant to them. that said, if you can't offer anything positive,
offer nothing. thanks again to everyone else.

lab@bounceit:

Forgive me for going on a bit:

Education is certainly NOT "...knowing where to look for answers...."

From the standpoint of the teacher, education is the communication of
knowledge. "...where to look for answers...." is just one bit of
knowledge, even though it is a very useful one.

Pointing out good sources for information is exactly 'teaching a man to
fish'. Writing the program for him might be 'giving him a fish', though
source code is actually quite instructive as well.

You have an absurd application of your pet maxim.

No, it is not in the Bible. It's beside the point, but Jesus himself, of
course, DID give people fish. He multiplied the loaves and fishes, turned
water into wine, etc. He never taught anyone to fish. Of course the
dialogue has become ridiculous at this point.

You are just not generous, which is a principle of the Bible. Read the
Proverbs. It completely contradicts your point of view.

I've run into this same comment repeatedly on several newsgroups, I believe
by the same person. What I wonder is how one has the time to cruise
newsgroups just to tell people you're not going to help them.

Newsgroups are exactly where the 'learning to fish' discussions are going on
in a lively fashion. A few folks like you detract from it.
