Hi

I’ve been asked by a new customer to replace their current SBS2003 Premium
server with SBS2008 Premium running on new hardware.

The customer has stated that they would like a fresh install. I have
suggested that a migration would be the easier option but they said no due to
historical problems on the current server.

Are there any documents available which would identify the process\sequence
of events to transfer data/settings to a new machine which takes into account
moving from SBS2003 to SBS2008?

Some questions that come to mind are:

1) What routine can be used to transfer file data from the old server to the
new server which maintains the folder/file permissions and structure
(including shares)? Would the permissions work correctly if I manually setup
the users on the new system with the same username etc?

2) How do I transfer exchange mailbox data and configuration settings to the
new machine?

3) How do I transfer sql databases and configuration to the new machine?

4) How do I transfer sharepoint data and configuration to the new machine?

5) How do I transfer client profiles following a change in domain name etc?

I would appreciate your expertise on this matter.

Regards

By "without migration" I assume you're not wanting to use the procedures at
http://www.sbsmigration.com. In that case, you would be starting over. When
you join the client computers to the new server's domain, your users will
lose their current profiles on their computers. You'll need to backup
everything and then copy them back to the new user's profiles after you
install the new server. You can save the user's mailboxes to pst files then
copy the data from the pst files into their mailboxes on the new server. pst
files won't save their rules, but if they don't have many this is probably
the easiest way. If you need to save everything, then you can do a full
backup of the Exchange server and restore it to the new server. I've read
about doing this, but haven't actually tried it. How you do it will depend on
your backup software. As far as shares on the current server being
transferred, you'll probably just need to write them all down on a piece of
paper and recreate them on the new server.
