I do admin work for a local non-profit. 2 or 3 years ago, they purchased a
license for SBS 2003 through Tech Soup, which distibutes donated Microsoft
software. The CD that came with that was the original SBS - no service packs.
After evaluating their existing server, we decided to not try to upgrade it
to SBS for various reasons. So when a local company donated a brand new Dell
server to them about a month ago, it was ordered without an OS, as we already
had this license.

We were unable to install on the Dell as it required CDs with at least SP1.
With assistance from with Dell support, we were able to create a new Disc 1
CD by slipstreaming Windows Server 2003 SP2 into the original disc 1. Using
this, we were able to get the OS installed, at least so it appeared. I went
through the entire install procedure, using all 4 of the CDs. As we already
had a domain controller, I added this server to the domain, ran dcpromo, and
then transferred all of the operation master roles to the new server per MS
documentation.

My problem is this - although the OS appears to be installed, the SBS
functions somehow are not completely installed. When I try to run the
Internet Connection wizard under server management, it fails. When I use
control panel - Add/remove programs and click on Windows SBS 2003, it gives
me some warnings. When I click on the button to acknowledge the warnings, it
then prompts me for SBS disk 1. When I point the browser to the CD drive, it
does not seem to recognize that I have the correct disk. I have tried using
the original disk and the slipstreamed disk. I have tried pointing it to the
I386 folder and every other folder on that CD.

So I am a bit stuck here. The server is working fine as a regular Windows
server. Users are running apps off of it. But I cannot seem to get the SBS
functionality working. Do I need to re-install from scratch? I'm not sure
what I would do differently if that is the case.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I have done this many times.

You need to install the OS without using the Dell Start here Cd.
Install directly from the sbs 2003 Cd/DVD
You may need to install the raid card driver from a disk etc
After the install, all you will need is a few drivers, that you can download
from Dell's website easily.
