Exchange POP3 connector does not deliver

I have installed SBS2000 and am using Exchange to check a
single (Global) POP3 mailbox every 15 minutes, which it
does infallibly. However, the messages are never
delivered, even though I have been careful to insure that
delivery addresses do indeed exist as aliases for a user,
and that user's mailbox can receive internal mail. I
have found that the messages are accumulating in the
Program Files\Microsoft Backoffice\Connectivity\POP3
Connector\InForward directory (as MSGxxxxxxxx-xxxxxx-
x.MMD files). They just will not forward. I have changed
to a Maximum log for the POP3 & Delivery agents, but no
errors are displayed. The delivery agent logs events
4020 (logging as an SMTP client), 4013 (SMTP connection
will be attempted ...) and 4032 (Reciepient has been
processed, no error code), but nothing delivers. Am I
just missing something? thanks for any help. regards.

Hi Jay,

One of the messages (quite likely the oldest) may be corrupt. Start at the
oldest message in that \inforward directory, and delete the messages one by
one. Once the corrupt one is deleted the rest generally will flow.

Thanks Les, but I tried that and still no luck. I had
actually been going through the list of messages in
InForward, and have now deleted them all. Still, when I
send a new message it stays in InForward, but there is no
error in the event log. It is as if the addresses are
not being resolved - but they all work internally. Any
more ideas? And thanks again.

Jay,

This is all I have on the pop3 connector. Probably you have it too, but just
in case:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324236

If the resolution is not there, then an uninstall/re-install of the
connector may be the next step. Run ms sbs setup from add/remove programs in
control panel. After the uninstall, delete the folders under the pop 3
connector folder before re-installing.

Do you have SBS sp1? If not, download and install that as well (after the
re-install). This apparently has some fixes for the connector.

Hi, Jay

I'm having the same problem. I've posted two times (pop3
connector - Jan, 06 2003 and NDR 404 on pop3 connector -
Jan, 13 2003) the symptoms are the same you wrote and
i've already tried a lot of things (KB articles: 325464,
324236, etc..) with no luck. Yesterday i tried also to
uninstall and reinstall the pop3 connector (although i
hadn't deleted the folders under ...\Pop3 connector) but
unfortunately with no luck. I've known of a guy that
fixed his problem by re-enabling the smtp relay (he had
removed it...); but it's not my case either. This is the
error i receive on my application log (on event Id 4032):

EVENT ID: 4032

A recipient has been processed. Recipient information:
NDR Status Code: 404
Error Code: 00000000
SMTP Reply:
SMTP Name: Gcol...@SerraeMar.local
Host SMTP: servidor.SerraeMar.local

don't you receive a similar error? Note the error code
00000000 and that there's no smtp Reply...
Please let me know about your progress!!
Best Regards,
Giovanni

Giovanni and Jay,

I've not seen Harry's book, so I don't know exactly what steps you're
taking. Just following the wizards on the todo list does normally result in
a working pop3 connector once you're done.

But in case there's been any straying from defaults, there is a document you
can work through to make sure Exchange is set up correctly to allow what it
should, and not what it should not (open relay). It's 324958 - HOW TO: Block
Open SMTP Relaying and Clean Up Exchange Server SMTP Queues on SBS 2000.

One important section that may apply to you guys:

Set the properties on the Default SMTP Virtual Server

On the Access tab, click the relay button at the bottom.
Select 'Only the List Below'
Make sure that the computers dialog box shows access granted to the internal
ip of the SBS *and* to the external IP address (external nic).
Make sure that Allow all computers which successfully authenticate to relay
etc etc *is* selected.

This is not intuitive, and I've seen articles (not for SBS) that suggest the
ip list should be blank.

There's more in that article on checking the SmallBusiness SMTP connector
configuration.

Hopefully, between the permissions article posted earlier in the thread, and
this one, things will work.

Les & Giovanni,

I just took care of the essential morning business, and
now have been called out, so I will have to deal with
this ASAP, but not at the moment, unfortunately. But
first to say the my event message, Giovanni, is the same
as yours (with no SMTP reply and error code zeros, which
I took to mean no error, but?) The only difference is
that my NDR Status code is 400 (not 404) - which I have
not yet made the diligent effort to understand. Also,
Les, I am using a single NIC (with a DSL router) so in my
Relay I have only the SBS server listed, plus "Allow all
computers which successfully authenticate to relay,..."
enabled. I did in fact read an article - as you say
probably not SBS, but for Exchange - which suggested that
the 'granted' list should be blank - and at one point I
did in fact remove the SBS server. But when I had this
problem I rembered my change and "undid" it, putting the
SBS server back in the list. Anyway, I just wanted to
put in this quick and longwinded note. I will be back
ASAP to try the other suggestions. Thanks so much and I
look forward to working together to solve this. Regards.

I have now had a chance to try the various ideas, but to
no avail. I checked permissions, services, etc. That
was OK. I finally did as you suggested Les, and used the
SBS install routine to uninstall the POP3 connector. I
then rebooted and ran through the SBS Internet Connection
Wizard once again to setup Exchange. Unfortunately, mail
is still sitting in InForward. I am considering a
complete uninstall of Exchange - seems ridculous, but
then my wheels are spinning and there is very little snow
outside. I could not follow your google connection, Les -
it leads to a general google site. I would be very
happy to hear any other suggestions or things to try. I
will keep at it, of course, and post my results. Regards.

Hi Jay,

I think the google link is worth having a look at. Note that those loooong
links wrap, you have to cut and pase each line separately from the post, and
append it to the ie address bar until you get it all.

As for the rest of your post - after you uninstall the pop3 connector, you
did re-install it by running the setup again, didn't you? You did say you
ran the ICW, but it wasn't clear if you had reinstalled the connector first.

BTW, don't *uninstall* exchange if you go that route, just *re-install* it,
again via add/remove in control panel. It's relatively painless.

But do look up that google doc.

I'm back at it. I deleted the Exchange Mailbox and
recreated a new one, as suggested in the Google link.
Same problem. After a further uninstall/reinstall of the
POP3 connector, I have changed from using a global
mailbox to having all mail from the POP3 account directed
to the administrator User Mailbox. Same problem, but
fewer logging messages. I am in agreement with Giovanni
in that the problem appears to be identified by the event
log (4032) which, in my case, reads (domain name
as "mydomain")

A Recipient has been processd. Recipient information:
NDR Status Code: 400

Error Code: 00000000
SMTP Reply:

SMTP Name: Admini...@tasmantis.mydomain.com
SMTP Host: trex.tasmantis.mydomain

This shows only as information, not an error per se.
Perhaps I overlooked it because of that. Should not
there be an SMTP reply, as Giovanni pointed out? Does
this suggest an SMTP problem that can be resolved?
Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi, Jay and Les!
I'm still here! I've read all the messages and that
suggestion on the google link, Les, I had already tried
it some weeks ago, but like Jay, with no success.
There's a question that i'm thinking about: Where exactly
is the error? On pop3 connector when it tries to deliver
the messages downloaded to smtp or the error occurs on
smtp itself when it tries to deliver the message to the
users account? (Although i think the answer is the first
one, since our internal emails are being correctly
delivered). If that is the point, what could we do to
test that moment when pop3 connector "passes" the message
to smtp for delivering? Another point that could lead us
to an answer is that in the documentation, i've read that
the SBS smtp connector settings always overwrite the
settings for the default smtp virtual server (exchange)-
is there some issue we're forgetting? (although i've
alredy done all settings like the KB articles told me to,
for example: that KB 324958 about blocking open smtp
relaying..). And as i wrote before, (read from MS
Exchange Troubleshooting), errors with numbers 4XX are
due to temporary (transient) problems.. (but what??).
Thank you two, Jay and Les, for the help!
I'll keep trying what i can to solve this problem (the
only thing í hadn't tried yet was to reinstall Exchange..)
and i'll keep posting here.
.Please let me know about your progress!
Thanks a lot again!!!

I have been posting for several weeks with a similar problem except in my
case nothing shows up in my Inforwarder. I just solved the problem today
with the help of a December post by Wayne Morgan and it was a simple
few-second config change.

Go to the Exchange System Manager,
> Administrative Groups, 1st Admin Group, Servers, Server name, Protocols,
SMTP, Default
> SMTP Virtual Server and right click. Choose Properties, Access tab, and
click the
> Authentication button. Anonymous Access has to be checked.

Hope this helps.

Les, once again, thank you very much for your help!
My problem still persists. I've tried The two links you
posted, but none of them applied to me. Did you read my
last post? Do you know anything about these 4XX errors or
that questions i've asked?
My error:

NDR Status Code: 404
Error Code:00000000
SMTP Reply:
SMTP Name: gcol...@serraemar.local
SMTP Host: Serv...@serraemar.local

Here's a successfull smtp transaction:
NDR Status Code:1

Error Code:00000000
SMTP Reply:
SMTP Name:<user>@<sbsserver>.com
SMTP Host:SBSSERVER

As I wrote before, my error - NDR 404,(at least i've read
that on MS Exchange Troubleshoot) is a temporary or
transient error (due to something not critical). But what
else could i try in order to stop it? ISA Server issue?
I've tried changing the Exchange and pop3 connector
folders' security permissions (granted ALL), but even so
nothing worked! I'm really desperated, since my reinstall
of the connector didn't worked either.
Any other tip?

And one more time, thanks a lot for all your help, Les!!!

Giovanni

Gio,

Well I'm sorry, but it's obvious by the length of the thread that I've not
been much help. As you likely have, I searched for anything on that error
earlier today and I got precious few hits, none of them resulted in a
solution.

Is it in fact a 'transient' error, as in sometimes the mail flows? I suspect
not.

How about turning the logging up to max for both pop3 connector and SMTP for
a bit. Perhaps we can get a few more hints that way.

These errors you posted, are they verbatim (you didn't edit them?).
Do you get any actual NDR's? or does the mail just stick in the inforward

Can you open any of the stuck mail items, say with notepad, so we can

Hello everyone. I do consulting work, so I spent
yesterday getting paid. The SBS problem is my own, so I
am just getting back to it again. My installation is in
my own office, intended to be a chance for me to better
learn these products. The consequece of that is some
flexibility, so I just completely wiped SBS and
reinstalled. POP3 is now working fine. (I tried
unistalling POP3 connector, reinstalling Exchange, etc,
but that did not work either) I am off to cover some
calls today, but would like to spend some time this
evening working through the original problem. Since my

problem. As I say, this is learning experience for me,
and surely there is something to learn here. Sorry I
have to run off now, but will repost as soon as I am back

With my POP3 connector now working, here are the events I
recieve, if this helps. Mydomain has been used for my
local domain, mypop3domain for my pop3 account domain. In
this case I emailed from outside my network using my

Dear Les,
Yes!!!! I've solved it!!
While reading other messages in this Newsgroup, someone
asked wich Nic should be configured in his smtp virtual
server, and a guy answered to leave it as "unassigned".
Well, that was the trick! My smtp virtual server was
configured with my internal NIC. When i changed it
to "unassigned" and started the pop3 connector (Í had
disabled it due to the problem), all the messages started
to flow to the users.
I hope this can help you, Jay! (tell me if that was the
solution for your problem too..)
And Les, thank you very much for all your help and
dedication!!!!!!!!!
Best regards!

Sorry, I posted this earlier but who knows what I did
wrong. So here it is again. My Exchange POP3 is now
working, owing to a complete reinstall of SBS. This was a
new install anyway, in my office, and the primary purpose
was a learning tool to keep up on what's current. Now
that it is working, it is my hope that we can compare my
installation to yours, Giovanni, and determine what the
problem might be. And Les, just to say that although this
post is long and we have not YET determined the solution,
your input has been invaluable and I appreciate the time
you have given.

So, here is my event log with everything working. Oh,
first to say that Fredericks suggestion above, to check
the "anonymous access" under the SMTP Virtual Server is
worth examining - I do not believe that I had it checked
before and, now with it working and the defaults provided
during the setup, it is. Thus far in examining my working
solution, this is the only difference I have noticed
compared to previous. I SHOULD have printed out my
previous setup screens, but sometimes I get impatient......

Here is the log for the delivery service that occurs after
the POP3 service checks and downloads mail from the POP3
account, where

domaingroup = my registered domain name (disguised)
trex.tasmantis.domaingroup.local = SBS fileserver (ip
102.168.1.2)
mypop3...@centurytel.net = the POP3 account being
checked (also disguised)
j...@digisys.net = email address where I sent my test mail

Queued mail for delivery

A recipient has been processed. Recipient information:

NDR Status Code: 1

Error Code: 00000000
SMTP Reply:

SMTP Name: v...@domaingroup.com
SMTP Host: trex.tasmantis.domaingroup.local

Note the NDR (Non-delivery?) status is now 1, and SMTP
reply is still blank (hmm?).

Maybe this will help in comparison to your event log. I
would be glad to send you all of my settings for
comparison if this is needed. It would sure be good to
figure out WHY this happened, as I do not want to have to
resort to a reinstall if this happens to one of my
clients. Just let me know. I will keep following this
post. Also Giovanni, feel free to contact me directly at
j...@digisys.net. We can try to work through it and then
post again with our results or if we get stuck.

Regards, jay
