I am trying to install XP on a PC but I'm running into
random errors during the install. As it is installing
(booted to the CD, reformated drive/partition, ran
install) some of the files can not be found. I remember
in the past that sometimes installing from the CD can
cause problems and another solution would be to copy the
install files to the harddrive and run the install from
the harddrive itself (I remember doing this with NT but
can't remember the steps involved)

I know I have to xcopy the files over but if I create the
new partition as NTFS, how do I boot to the harddrive in
DOS inorder to move the files? If someone would run
through the steps involved I would REALLY appreciate it.

Thanks

Don't know how you'd do that, but providing your CD is not faulty ( in
which case you can order a replacement from Microsoft ) the most likely
cause is Faulty RAM.

Run a RAM testing utility over it, as well as looking at re-seating
and/or re-positioning the RAM.
If it still comes up faulty, re-place.

I had an account that was trying to reinstall Win98 that was having
this problem. I used Ghost to image another good Win 98 which was the
exact same machine. The machine works fine now but no testing of the
cd reader. The fact the machine appears to work well with an imaged
hard drive suggests either bad media or a bad cd reader as Henry
mentioned

Removing hard drives from workstations and inspecting in other
workstations is what I do. I install the hard drive on the cd reader
cable. I boot off the good hard drive and run checkdisk and av scans
to make sure the drive is possibly ok. While you are there you can
copy the cd if you get creative with cable..
