I'm running SBS 2000 c/w Veritas Backup Exec 8.6 c/w Open File Option Agent.
I'm able to daily tape backups, and backup open files. I'm thinking of
upgrading to SBS 2003. How good is the SBS 2003 backup program? Will it
allow me to schedule daily tape backups? Will it backup open files?
......or should it upgrade my Veritas Backup Exec to vers. 9.1???

cheers.

Very good. So good that unless you need encryption on the backup of the
data, there's not much need for any other product.

Hi Susan,

So in my case, we've been using Win2k Server's backup. We're going to
migrate to sbs2003 premium in January. I was proposing purchasing Veritas,
are you saying no need to purchase veritas that the backup software with
sbs2003 is so much better than that of win2k's?

No need for Veritas...unless you need to consistently do restores of
individual mailboxes. This is really the biggest difference (besides
encrypting your backup jobs) between the two. Although, backup and restoring
individual mailboxes is much easier to do in Exchange, thats what I switched
to and dumped Veritas.

Susan,

Does it allow for Scheduling similar to Veritas where you can specify days
of the week and exclude holidays?
How about meaningful messages. I have had issues with NTBackup asking to put
unused or free media into the media pool. Turns out the tape was full and
was asking for another but it was very cryptic and not at all user friendly.
Also, Veritas allows you to compress data if hardware compression is not
available. It also gives you stats about tape usage. This allows you to look
at what you are backing up and how much of the tape is being used. With
NTBackup you have to guess or estimate that your data will fit on one
tape...
Also, with NTBackup we ended up scripting the backup because the scheduling
and tape management was very poor in SBS 2000.

Thanks,
John

Ooooo....very good questions. I found win2k ntbackup to be less than
adequate. I'll wait your response.
