Does anybody know why the only couple of Windows XP stations on our
primarily Windows 2000 network (SBS2000 server) dont refresh explorer
windows after doing things such as making new folders? heres some examples :

right click in explorer window and make new folder; folder doesnt show until
f5 or refresh is pressed

rename this new folder;folder is renamed however it still shows 'new folder'
as the name until f5 or refresh is pressed

this is just for network locations on our SBS2000 server.

I've done windows update for both the server and xp workstations but it
doesnt seem to help.. just a bit confused :-/ And it just isnt 1 machine
thats affected, it seems to be at least two...

Thanks for any suggestions!

Chuck

More like a video card issue? what's the refresh rate on those video cards...
update the driver?

Hey, I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one! I have the same problem
with the SBS server here at home, using an XP workstation. I create folders
and files, and I have to click on refresh in order for the new folder or
file to appear. It started happening just a few months ago, but darn if I
know which patch or service pack may have introduced it.

Chuck -- found the answer. After your post, I decided that if two of us were
having the problem, then perhaps there is a fix available. Try this quick
registry change:
Run regedit and go to HKLM > System > Current Control Set > Control > Update
and modify the UpdateMode parameter from 1 to 0 - then close RegEdit and
reboot.

I just tried it on my XP workstation, and it seems to work fine. Appears
that this same fix has been around since Windows 95.

Kevin, I just ran into this thread by accident.

Actually, I've experienced this problem also and never found a fix
nor any solutions:

http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&threadm=l7Tb9.81
34%24uF.1397230%40news20.bellglobal.com&rnum=1&prev=/groups%3Fas_q%3D%255C%2

omatic%26safe%3Dimages%26ie%3DUTF-8%26oe%3DUTF-8%26lr%3D%26hl%3Den

Now that i've read your solution, I will try it out. First I will try
to see if my original problem still does occur, if it does, i'll change
the registry, reboot and try again.

Since Windows 95? Do you still have the information you found
to get to this solution? I'd like to read about it and understand what
this registry UpdateMode is doing?

Thanks

Serge, all I did was search Google using various words and combinations
(files, folders, refresh, windows, etc.) and happened on this fix that was
for Win95. then I found another link recommending the same fix for Win2000.
So being in the "what the heck, let's take a risk" mode - I check my WinXP,
and sure enough, that parameter was sitting there -- all nice and pretty
saying: please change me from a 1 to a 0 !

So I did.
And it worked!

I just tried my original problem on the same computer where it was happening
back in Aug 2002 :

http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&threadm=l7Tb9.81
34%24uF.1397230%40news20.bellglobal.com&rnum=1&prev=/groups%3Fas_q%3D%255C%2
55CServer%255CUsers%255Cusername%2520folder%252C%2520refresh%2520not%2520aut
omatic%26safe%3Dimages%26ie%3DUTF-8%26oe%3DUTF-8%26lr%3D%26hl%3Den

And the problem is no longer occuring, and i've never done anything to fix
it. It might be
a Windows Update or SP1 that maybe had fixed the problem.

I checked the Registry key, it is set to 1.

I'll keep this registry setting in mind, in case this problem happens
with me again, maybe on another machine.

Thanks
