Can I just ask for clarification

Do I need to download and install each of the 12 .exe files on the SP1 page?

Why is the SP packaged this way, instead of a single installer like W2K-SP1?

Thanks

The first 5 are needed to upgrade Exchange to SP level 1. I don't know why it is not one installer.

Hello,

Somet non-permanent connections disconnect after 50% of downloading. Making it smaller will prevent to download the "whole" package again.

* SP1 FOR EXCHANGE 2000 SERVER NOW AVAILABLE

Microsoft has released Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Exchange 2000 Server.

SP1 includes fixes, along with feature enhancements and utility updates.

Outlook Web Access (OWA) with SP1 allows attachments in public folder

items and supports deleted item recovery. Other key features include

Mailbox Manager (previously available only for Exchange 5.5), full Web

forms support for building Web-based applications on the Exchange store,

Microsoft FrontPage tools for building Web forms, a migration tool for

moving Exchange 5.5 mailboxes from another organization into Exchange

2000, and a free/busy calendar connector for Lotus Notes and Novell

Groupwise. Antivirus software vendors will be able to incorporate the

features of the new Virus Scanning API 2.0 into their programs. A

separate service pack is available for Exchange 2000 Conferencing

Server. The SP1 CD-ROM includes Outlook 2002 and Outlook 2001 for

Macintosh.

So I gather that applying the service pack is applicable to SBS 2000?

Yes. As the posting of Jeff says it makes Avapi virus scanning possible. This was for me the main reason for NOT installing SBS 2000 anywhere but in the next weeks I will start deploying SBS 2000.

I have dones some testing of Ex2KSP1 on SBS2000 with Trend SBS 5.

Scanmail is now seeing the viruses, and sending a message to the
administrator, but it is also passing the virus intact to the recipient,
instead of removing it from the message.

I will do more testing tomorrow.

Regards
Daryl

I have verified that Trend Micro Scanmail and Exchange 2000 does not offer any virus protection at all. Even with SP1 it does NOT work. Virusses just pass threw to a workstation and it can be opened in Outlook allthough I have Scanmail configured that it must delete a virus on arrival.

There's this comment on the Exchange SP1 page:

Antivirus API Improvements
SP1 includes an updated Virus Scanning API. Virus Scanning API 2.0 provides
improved support for scanning streaming content and reporting on the sender
and receiver of the virus. However, to make use of the new Virus Scanning
API 2.0 functionality, antivirus vendors have to update their code. The new
API is backwardly compatible, so all existing antivirus products that use
Virus Scanning API 1.0 continue to work after SP1 has been installed.

Perhaps this explains it? I wonder what Trend have to say about it.

I have contacted Trend already about this. A couple of month ago they told me that SP1 for Exchange was needed to take advantage of Avapi scanning, I assumed that their software was already capable of doing that but it appears not.

This is from Trend support...

We'll be releasing Scan Mail 5.1 to be able to use the full functionality of
the SP 1 that Microsoft just released for Exchange 2000.
We have no release schedule for this version yet because the developers are
still doing beta tests on the new version.

Trend sales says "This version iscurrently under beta, scheduled for release in early July"

I am debating whether to beta test this. (It seems like every version from Trend has been a "beta experience". )

I am embarassed that the upgrade to SBS2000 (that I could not put of any longer them we did) has resulting in less protection then before.

A definite high coefficient of anxiety.

I think that we probably are seeing a bit more about why BO2K was being delayed last year, and what didn't get completely resolved, even though the product "had to ship".  I don't believe that you can fault Trend for not shipping the same day for a situation like this, it tends to say more about the absence of a relationship between Trend and MS, than it does about Trend. Maybe that means the same thing. The result is the same....lack of protection.

You bring up a topic that I have been concerd with. I have just
purchased SBS 2000 looking for Anti Virus tool. Download Trend Scan
mail. I have not been impressed wiht the download and install. After
reading your experience I wonder what we should do.

Have you had any problems installing Exchange SP1 on SBS 2000?

Hello,

When you have Winsock Proxy client installed, it may broke because SP1 reveals a bug in the Winscock Proxy client.

Sorry,

I am mistaken. This Winsock Proxy client bug seems to be exposed by installing SP2 for Windows 2000.

"The workarounds are to disable or uninstall the Winsock Proxy Client, or upgrade to ISA and the ISA Winsock client.".

Trend have confirmed to me that Scanmail 5.0 doesnt work with Ex2K SP1.
Scanmail 5.1 is apparently being released "very soon" according to Trend. I
have tested the release candidate and found it to work perfectly. It is
using AVAPI 2.0, so you now get sender, recipient etc in the notification
and logs. So far, I cant fault it so things are looking pretty good.

Hi,

With Scanmail 5.0 and Exchange 2000 (no sp1), a virus arriving via
smtp would not be seen by scanmail (scanmail monitor would not report
on the attachment in its log). But simply doing a forward on the new
email back to yourself would cause scanmail to find and action any
virus in the email.

Now with Scanmail 5.0 and Exchange 2000 sp1, all attachements arriving
via smtp are logged in the scanmail monitor log but NONE are seen to
have a virus (all are reported clean). And now doing a forward to
yourself causes scanmail to see the virus and report it as being
cleaned (ans send messages to the admin) but the virus is still
present... very scary.

It would be nice if Scanmail 5.1 would take advantage of the new 2.0
version of the av api and re-start issuing email to the sender and
receiptient to...

I think you should check out http://www.opswat.com/ there are 2 or 3 products that may be a match, I think that OESIS Framework at http://www.opswat.com/products/oesis-framework provide a single interface to many antivirus packages, another option is I think Metascan at http://www.opswat.com/products/metascan which is more for ISV, I also found that many antivirus engines certified by OPSWAT at http://www.opswat.com/certified.

I hope this helps.

David
