In the past I have restarted the server when ever emails started playing up,
but this time I have done that and it has not made any difference.

I sent myself an email yesterday and it did not arrive until 8 am this
morning. Here is the important bit of the file header:

Received: from anchor-sbs-1.mail.demon.net ([194.159.243.143]
helo=mail-1.sbs.demon.net)
by anchor-sbs-2.mail.demon.net with esmtp (Exim 3.16 #1)

Received: from sbs1548.customer.demon.com
(server.sbs1548.customer.demon.com) [194.159.222.28]
by mail-1.sbs.demon.net with esmtp id 13U1sC-000MUu-01; Wed, 30 Aug 2000

Received: by SERVER with Internet Mail Service (5.5.2448.0)

Subject: MS-Access Tips for Serious Users.htm

MIME-Version: 1.0
X-Mailer: Internet Mail Service (5.5.2448.0)
Content-Type: multipart/mixed;

As you can see, it was sent Tues 29th at 13:15 and received immediately by
SERVER, but then was not received by the next stage
(sbs1548.customer.demon.com) until Wed 30th at 08:01. I assume from this
that there is a problem with Exchange Server on our server.

Can anyone throw any light on this? Are there any ways of examining the mail
queue to see what is clogging it up? Are there any diagnostic or maintenance
utilities that I should be running? I note that in the Event Log, the
Exchange message store seems to be being rebuilt every day - is this normal?

All help much appreciated

In Exchange at the server there is a tab called connections. If you go
to the IMS there is a tab called ques (sp.) that has 4 drop down
boxes. You can look there to see what is hanging out in the various
ques. I saw 6 messages in the inbound that were months old and stuck
which I deleted. There were also some messages stuck in the outblound
que that had invalid smtp reply addresses so they would never be sent.
Mial delivery was acceptable in spite of some of the junk messages.
Exchange does some maintenance at night be design. That may be the
logs you are seeing.

Make sure you have configured exchange properly... the particular setup
that could be causing this is located within the internet mail service
connection, in the dail up tab. I have selected to deliver mail as soon
as qued, but at most every 1 minute. This will make sure that if an
outgoing message gets stuck for some reason, exchange will keep minute
after minute trying to send it.

If you check the queues as Jim describes, you will be able to determine if
the problem is at your end or at the ISP, which seems more likely. Exchange
is designed to accomodate thousands of users, and it seems unlikely that the
slowdown would be on your end.

The only reason outgoing messages should be building up in the queue is if
you have deliberately set Exchange up for them to do so. For example, if
you have it set to send mail not more than once an hour, they would
accumulate for an hour, then all send.
