This past weekend two of my SBS 2003 R2 Standard servers hung. The screen
was illuminated blank similar to just before 'starting up' is displayed after
the windows splash screen. Server responded to ping from the LAN, but did
not answer to CTRL-ALT-DEL nor did it show any mouse movement or respond to
keyboard. On one server, this happened in the course of a restart. On the
other, it happened overnight and unless windows update triggered a restart I
don't know what was going on. In both cases I triggered a crash dump with Rt
Ctrl + Scroll Lock + Scroll Lock, and the servers came back up. The server
that hung overnight counted VERY slowly through the memory dump, taking 2
minutes to complete the dump at a count of 85. The other server counted to
100 and restarted in perhaps 15-20 seconds which is more consistent with what
I've seen in the past. Not sure why the difference in speed in equivalent
servers.
Is this likely a windows update issue?
What should I look for and/or fix?
