I have a new desktop running VISTA and an old desktop running XP. They share
a network together via a crossover cable, all works fine
XP is connected to the net,
I can not connect Vista to the net, when I change the IP to remove Auto
dectect and put an IP number the network stops.
DNS is on Auto detect.
XP computer is runnning XP Pro, Vista is Home Basic.
I have a program that has a shared database and acceses the data from the
Vista machine. XP is the workstation.

I had the same problem.

I've reading throw lots of posts on forums, and neither solution has been a
good solution for me.

I followed instructions on forums, doing the following:
0.- Make sur both computers were wire-connected, same sub-net, gateway, etc.
1.- Make sure both computers were on the same workgrup
2.- Drop firewalls and anti-virus software on both computers
3.- Set up same usser account names/passwords on both computers
4.- Make sure to set up Vista network connection as private, file sharing,
password protection, etc., as written forums.
5.- Added IP addresses of both computers to their respective secure zone, in
internt explorer configuration.

After all of that, no way to connect from Vista to XP. Ping test were
successfull, even remot desktop connection to XP.

Finally, I resolved the problem, doing the following:
A).- Local security policis (XP computer):

Local policies\Security Options\Network Access:= "Classic: local users as
themselves"

B).- On Vista coputer, NTML compatibility (because this protocol is used for
file-sharing), doing the following:
http://technet.microsoft.com/hi-in/library/bb727037(en-us).aspx

The problem was solved.
