We are getting an “Unknown Error” message when we attempt to modify specific
users in Project Server 2007 by going through Server Settings. The only
change that we have made recently to Active Directory is that we changed
users’ Display Names so they show up as “LastName, FirstName” instead of
“FirstName LastName”. It appears that this error is only happening to these
users; users that still have their old Display Name are functioning normally.

I have verified that these users are not checked out by checking the “Force
Check-in” page in the Project Server 2007 Server Settings. I am also getting
errors 7715 and 7732 in the Windows Event log during Active Directory
synchronization. I suppose that I could remove everyone from Project Server
then re-add them, but I need to make sure that their ID numbers still match
their project assignments.

What can I do to resolve this issue?

We're having the same issue, though in our case after moving users to a new
domain. For most users we've just run stsadm -o migrateuser then edited the
user's domain name through Server Settings>Manage Users. However we can't
edit some users - we just get 'Unknown Error'. There is nothing in the
sharepoint log files to indicate the cause of the error, nor is there
anything in the windows event logs. Anyone else seen this and know a
resolution?

Found the solution. The users I was trying to edit were enterprise resources
and were checked out. From Server Settings, Force Check-in Enterprise
Objects then select Enterprise Resources and check in the offending users.
The error message could have been a bit more helpful for such a simple issue!
