Microsoft released a AI Update patch for this problem. You can get it at
http://www.microsoft.com/games/age2/ or alternatively at the fan web sites
http://www.aoe2.com/
http://www.aoe2.net/
and a few other sites.

Hope this helps :)

When I'm about to make the kill, the computer resigns. This is very
aggravating. I do not have the time to play on the zone and the computer is
pretty tuff in the hard setting. But it is no fun not to roll in and kill
everything. Please, can any one help??

No, this did not help. I installed the update, played a game, and after I
went in for the kill, the computer resigned. The patch is to stop the
computer from resigning after a few minutes into a new game. And yes, I had
that problem too and the patch stoped it. I'm hoping Microsoft comes out with

a update for this problem. I'm really getting it this game. Thanks for the
help GS.

That behaviour is correct. If you want to stop the computer from resigning
"ever", and go hunt down that very last peasant/fishing boat War Craft/AoE1
style, you've got to go edit the AI script in the DRS file yourself.
What the script does (after patching) is to consider a "no hope" case, where
recovery is absolutely impossible -- such as 'no peasants, unable to build
peasants' -- ie, all villes killed and TC destroyed or no food to create a
new ville (and you don't have vills to gather food). Such "no hope"
condition is generally fair and sufficient ("good enough" condition for
resignation) rather than having to really scour the map in search of the
last few hiding units.
[What the script doesn't always do -- there are times you'll find that last
one/few vills abandoned in a corner somewhere and the computer does not
attempt to build a new TC, nor does it resign when all the military units
have been destroyed].

Sounds like there is a fix. I went to the dir. of AOE 2, then in Data, but
there is no .DRS file with the name AI. There are about 10 other files with
the ending .drs. But these files are HUGE. Which file do I edit and how to
edit it? Or is it worth it? Thanks Automan.

You can have a look at this file. I´ts suppose to fix the problem. It was posted
in this NG a while ago. I havn't tried it because it don't find it funny to hunt
down every last enemy soldier. And if you play at harder skill it´s not a problem.
But I recomend you make a copy of your original file first. Or maybe you can
just compare the file with your own and se what changes are made.

Sorry Cooney, I don't remember which filename it is...
What I do know is that, when you download the patch (www.ageofkings.com) it
is just 1 DRS file -- find the file with the same name and replace it with
the downloaded version. That fixes the premature resignation.
Apart from some kind of binary header, the DRS file appears to be readable
text -- you could try editing the file to make the computer unbearably
obstinate till you hunt down and kill everything -- but note that there are
some _rules_ which have been hardcode (I think), which are still different
from WC2/AoE1 -- you do not have to destroy *every* building and tower --
towers, fishing traps, etc, "don't count".

Gentlemen,
Thank you for the help. It is really appreciated. Marcus, I down load the
file, but it did not work. I kind of like to going in for the kill. I used
to play on the Zone with AOE, ROR and would get pissed at people resigning
when I went in for the kill. When playing ROR against the computer, I would
always play in Multiplayer. The computer would play to the death. But with
AOK, you cannot play in Multiplayer against the computer. You need a player
from the internet. But the computer still resigns in Multiplayer. Thanks
again for all the help. I still think that ROR and AOK are the games of the
Century.

Didn´t the file work at all? It´s supposed to stop the
computer from resigning unless it has less then 5
villagers and 5 soldiers acording to the author of the
file. So it´s not a final solotion if you want to kill every
unit and building.

Interestingly, I played a quick 1v1 against a computer opponent on HARD setting
last night just to practice my start. The game was over pretty quickly, but I
literally had to hunt down the last enemy unit (a cannon galley) and sink it
before the game was over. The computer REFUSED to resign...a refreshing change of
pace!

Since I took red, comp was blue and it took FOREVER to find that damn ship...even
after I used Spy to see where he might be. Heh...

Marcus,

I tried again on the hard setting. The computer lasted a lot longer but it
still resigned before all units and building where killed. It looks like I
need to start playing on the zone. I'm starting to get go at this game. It
just takes a little practice. It is hard know what to update first and wait
to update the others. Well, thanks for the help. Take care.
