Age of Empires III: The War Chiefs - game paused

I recently bought The War Chiefs expansion for Age of Empires III. There was
one thing that really irked me; the huge, opaque GAME PAUSED box that covers
up about a quarter of the screen in the center whenever I pause the game.
Why did they change to this from the small, white "game paused" that was
effectively transparent, because it was not surrounded by a huge brown box?
How on earth could the publishers think this huge box is an improvement over
what was used before?

To me this seems like nothing but an irritant to anyone, like me, that plays
the game solo. I very often pause the game to issue commands to units. Now,
when I pause the game, hotkey a unit, the screen of course centers on it
and.... I can't see the damn thing!

I then applied all updates to AoE III and The War Chiefs, hoping one would
reverse this irritant. Nope!

I realize those that play on-line don't pause the game; therefore don't care
about this issue. But there are a heck of a lot of us that don't play
on-line.

I find it hard to believe no one else has a problem with this. Is there some
way to get rid of this huge brown box?

ur dilemma mirror's mine exactly. found info to the existance of warchiefs
patch 1.05, which will remove banner and correct dozens of other issues. my
source says this patch has not been released yet, and i can find no other
reference to it. if u have any info about this patch please drop a note to:

I have the same problem. It's very frustrating. I like to play games
taking my time to give orders and give the game a more tactical
approaching, but with the giant pause message in middle of the screen
its really annoying to do this. A very bad decission from the game
developers.

I just found a trick on a web to return to the original pause mode
(Age of Empires III base game mode).

Go to the subdirectory "\Startup" of the installed game, for example:

C:\Program Files\Age of Empires III\Startup

There should be some .con and .cfg files.

Create a file named " user.cfg" and add a line that says this:

hidepopups

Only this single line.

Save the file and open the game. Try to press Pause and see. :)
