How can I use RDS via HTML pages to connect to a Unix database.

I am wondering if I can use RDS or similar within an html page running
inside IE 4/5 (thus, client side scripting only) to access ad database on
Unix.
I think RDS on the client need a counterpart on the server (inside ISS3/4).
Any other method to do this? Maybe JDBC? How?
