ODBC SQLConfigDriver error on install

Has anyone experienced this error when installing the 32X release of Visual
Interdev?
The full error is "Error while configuring ODBC drivers"
"ODBC's SQLConfigDriver failed for driver SQL Server"
After this, the VI installation reports that the installation was
unsuccessful:-((
I have tried deinstalling, deleting the required reg entries via the
"readmeis.htm" and still get the same errors on install.
Any clues?

No to Office97, and yes SQL Server was already installed with sp2, and yes
I did try to uninstall and reinstall(many times).
I was hoping someone else had seen this error in the newsgroup. I'd rather
not wipe out my system and start from scratch, but...
