Help a novice!!!!

I am trying to make changes to a database someone else has
written.

When I open the database I cannot see objects such as
forms, reports or querries in the database view.

I can see the forms through main switchboard and make
changes to the forms and events.

You mean that you can see the database window, which should contain the
objects on its various tabs, but the tabs are empty? Possibly the
developer has hidden the objects. Try setting the option to view hidden
objects: Tools -> Options -> View tab, put a check mark in "Hidden
Objects".

Hold the shift key down when opening the MDB.
