I have a database file which does not work anymore.
It was password protected.
When I open it I put the passaword in, like usual, then I get (brackets {}
and [] are my comments):
" The database {so and so} needs to be repaired or isn't a database file.
You or another user may have unexpectedly quit [NOT TRUE] Microsoft Access
while a Microsoft Access Database was open.
Do you want Microsoft Access to attempt to repair the database?"
I click Yes
Then I Get:
"NOT A VALID PASSWORD"
Then
"The database {so and so} can't be repaired or isn't a database file"
and finally
"NOT A VALID PASSWORD"
I have tried do import to a new database, with exactly the same result.
I have tried to compress and repair, with the same result.
I have tried to open the application and file with /repair and also with
/decompile parameters: same result.
I DO NOT HAVE A RECENT BACKUP.
Any trick, utility, program or service - even non free - welcome!!
please HELP!!!

Anyway, I posted my story to another newsgroup and received the following
reply from a gentleman named Larry Linson. This was such a knowledgeable and
welcomed message that I am sharing it with you verbatim at the risk of
crossing Mr. Linson for not consulting him first. I wish you good luck. Here
it is:
-start---------
The usual cause for corruption in a multiuser environment is "ungraceful
termination". Power outage, users powering down while an Access app is
running, and network problems are the usual culprits. Your description of
"crude Win95 peer network" may have identified the problem.
You have one more hope, given what you've tried. Go to
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/ and download the Jet 3.5 Update
JET35UPD.EXE. When you unpack it there will be a separate utility named
JETCOMP. It can sometimes recover where the built-in Compact and Repair
cannot.
If it doesn't, then you'll need to recover from your most recent backup.
If you don't have a recent backup, then my late Mother would tell you that
you should consider it a character-building experience and learn from your
mistakes. <G> Goodness knows, she told that to me enough times.
An alternative, albeit not a free one, would be to contact Peter Miller at
http://www.pksolutions.com. He has a very good reputation for success at
data recovery.
-end---------
