This is with Access 2007 on Vista I have 6 other machines running XP that
dont have this problem I have the backend
MDB on a 2008 server.
To tell you the truth I'm sick of MS, Vista, and all of MS's disfucntional
garbage. I've been writting in Acess since 1995, but if someone knows of
another DB front end please let me know.

The error message points to disfunctional garbage with your network
infrastructure. Isn't it obvious it's not the application that's the
problem if 6 users are doing just fine?

And yet you still feel the need to ask a question when the answer is
patently obvious to anyone with a modicum of experience?
Apart from that, yes, I am repeatedly disappointed with the lack
of testing and development for this product, and that includes the
network and file system support it depends on.
Of course there was a new system planned for Vista, but it got
canned. Maybe that's where all the resources went.

This could be a Vista specific problem. Issues that you may encounter
when you open or are using a Microsoft Office Access database on a
computer that is running Windows Vista - 935370.
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=935370
This hotfix talks about problems between two Windows Vista systems
which isn't exactly the same environment as yours. Nevertheless
worth checking out.

Part 2 is from my website.
http://www.granite.ab.ca/access/performanceldblocking.htm
Take a look at the section titled Bound Form and ask more questions if
that isn't clear. Which it may very well not be as I'm not a very
good tech writer.
>We get "Your network access was interrupted. To continue close the

BTW is this a split system with a FE on each client PC and a BE on the
server?
Thanks for your reply.
I've asked the customer and he says that they have Access 2007 on all their
PCs. 4 are Vista and have this problem. 1 is XP and has not had this problem
as yet.
They developed the database themselves but don't know what is meant by front
end/ back end so I presume not. I installed the server as a straight
replacement for their old SBS2003 server. I didn't concern myself with what
the data was too much. I just used robocopy to move the data from one server
to the other. In that sense they are just Access 2007 clients accessing an
MDB file stored in a share on the 2008 server. I've made not made any changes
as yet to how the server operates as a file server. All settings are still
default so opportunistic locking is still turned on as is shadow copy.
Having not seen the database itself and not being an an access user really
your advice about using a bound form is a bit beyond me. What should I ask
him that would be helpful to you? I may ask him to register so he can post
here himself.
Many thanks
Chris

If it is not a split database, that’s even worse. Sharing a non-split is not
the solution. If you need to split, look here (this blog) first before using
the Wizard.
http://blog.nkadesign.com/2009/ms-access-upsizing-to-sql-server-2008/
And make sure all users have access right the Server 2008 folder including
Read, Write, Delete, and Modify. Does the users have permission to access the
Server?

I'm waiting for my customer to get back to me about the file permissions but
he is thinking about migrating up to SQL get around this problem.
He has SBS2008 Premium so he's already licensed for it

Let's think about your answer... which was "The error message points to disfunctional garbage with your network
infrastructure. Isn't it obvious it's not the application that's the problem if 6 users are doing just fine?"
Okay, let's think about that shall we...if 6 machines are having no problem at all on the SAME network, how can the issue so obviously lie within his network?
I personally have seen this issue on Access versions 2003, 20007 and now 2010.
As a consultant I would NOT recommend access for mission critical multi-user applications. It simply is NOT a viable or robust enough solution to effectively meet your needs. If you want a viable solution there are a number of ways to go about implementing a multi-user database driven application. First I would suggest you look into SQL Server (express editions work fine) for the backend database. You can either write a windows app for your frond end using Visual Studio or you can write a web-based front end for your app which has it's benefits.
