Who was Anne Frank?
Anne Frank was born on June 12, 1929, in Frankfurt, Germany. She was the second daughter of Otto and Edith Frank, who were liberal Jews. In 1933, after the Nazis came to power, the Frank family moved to Amsterdam, where Otto had a business. Anne and her older sister Margot attended school, learned Dutch, and made friends. They lived a normal life until 1940, when Germany invaded the Netherlands and imposed anti-Jewish laws and measures.

Why did Anne Frank write a diary?
On July 6, 1942, after Margot received a call-up notice for a Nazi labor camp, the Frank family went into hiding in a secret annex behind Otto's office building. They were joined by four other Jews: Hermann and Auguste van Pels, their son Peter, and Fritz Pfeffer. They lived in cramped and precarious conditions, relying on the help of four trusted employees who brought them food, news, and books. Anne received a diary as a gift for her 13th birthday, just before they went into hiding. She decided to write in it as a way of expressing her thoughts and feelings, as well as documenting their daily life in the annex. She also hoped that one day her diary would be published as a book.

What happened to Anne Frank and her diary?
The secret annex was discovered by the Nazis on August 4, 1944, after an anonymous tip. The eight hiding Jews were arrested and deported to different concentration camps. Anne and Margot were sent to Bergen-Belsen, where they died of typhus in February or March 1945. Otto was the only survivor of the group. He returned to Amsterdam after the war and learned that his wife and daughters were dead. He also found out that one of his employees, Miep Gies, had saved Anne's diary and other papers from the annex. He read them and decided to fulfill Anne's wish of publishing them. He edited them slightly and gave them to a Dutch publisher, who released them under the title Het Achterhuis (The Annex) in 1947.
