Zak,
First off I'd like to say that either someone misunderstood you or was

mistaken when they said Exchange 5.5 doesn't support POP3 or IMAP for
email
retrieval. Both of these methods are supported for email retrieval.
Also,
you can't send mail using POP3 or IMAP, you use an SMTP host when
sending
mail. POP3 and IMAP are recieve only. Back to the Proxy issue, can you
use
other WinSock applications like telnet or command line ftp from these
machines? Is access control enabled? If it is, let's try disabling it
for
troubleshooting. Is packet filtering enabled? If it is, let's try
disabling
it for troubleshooting. Have you tried using other email applications
such
as Eudora to check email?

OK. Where do I start ?

I setup Outlook 2000 as requested in the link you kindly provided and
when
it attempts to dial out, using proxy server it simply cannot connect to
it
from the client.

Having failed misrably with my installation of Exchange 5.5 to make a
central POP3 enabled mail server. I was told by one of your engineers
that
E5.5 does not support retrieval/sending of POP3 or IMAP accounts and
that
only SMTP is supported.

I then deleted E5.5 and I am simply trying to connect Outlook 2000 (on
the
client PCs) through Proxy server on the NT server PC to my ISP so that
each
PC can effectively download its own email.

So, to recap, 2 clients running outlook 2K and one server running proxy
server 2.0. When trying to connect the clients to the ISP through Proxy
server I simply get the 'attempting to connect' animation in outlook and
after about 20-30 seconds it gives up with a timeout error. No activity
is
shown on the modem at all i.e. I don't think the clients are getting as
far
as proxy server !
